More bad luck with the truck. I took it to the car show yesterday and was having trouble getting it into 5th gear. One the way home from the show, in 5th gear, it started whinning real loud. The noise reduced with my speed. The tranny has never been rebuilt so I guess its time. Hopefully I don't have any bad gears and its just worn out bearings. I tried calling Chuck from Chucks Truck to see if he had any gears in case I need some. No luck contacting him and will try later.
I have been pounding the pavement trying to locate a new place to store the truck. A lot of good leads and I may have found a really nice place to store it not too far from where its now. A real strong CBS building and is lockable too. I am meeting with the owner next week. I hope its not too expensive. My friend decided not to put a building on his place so that option is out. I should of been looking the day the house went up for sale. Today they are doing the home inspection so the deal may fall through if too many issues are found.
Keith,
When it rains it pours I guess. Its bad enough having to worry about a new home for the truck without having it decide to toss a gear whine into the mix.
Is it just 5th gear? or does it whine in all the gears?
Bobby mainly 5th gear. Spoke to Chuck today and he said he has the bearings in stock and some NOS gears. He even suggested maybe going with a later 1953+ transmission with synchronized gearing. Will have to see when its torn down.

I don't remember if you have an engine hoist or not, but I got a great deal on a 2 ton from Harbor Freight. With a 20% coupon I was out the door for under $170.
Figured out the problem. The bearings may be bad in my siren and I think the noise was sounding like it was coming from the tranny. I removed the siren fan belt and the engine and tranny were quiet. My friend looked at the truck and noticed the fan belt was too small and wasn't riding right in the pulleys. He thought it might be the belt and not the bearings. I haven't heard the whinning noise since. I am going to get the correct belt and see what happens. I still want to rebuild the tranny (50K miles) but it is not a priority now. I still haven't pulled the engine on the Buick. The tranny guy gave me a price of $1000 - $400 parts -$600 labor. I don't think thats too bad of a price. Thats with me bringing the tranny to him.
Still looking for a place to store the truck .... 6 weeks to go before I have to move it. Getting nervous!!
Thanks Guys!! We put a set of bearings in about 7 years ago. Cost around $80 for the set. I can't see why they would be going bad because they weren't used that much and were well greased. After I removed the belt we spun the siren and didn't really hear a lot of noise coming from it. Maybe it has to be spinning at at higher revolutions before you can hear the noise? For sure, the noise was immediately gone after the belt was removed. My friend thought the belt may be causing the noise since it is not riding right in the pulley. I'm not sure if that's the case because the belt looked good and its been there for years. I'm leaning towards the bearings being bad.
Jim.... I'm sure I will find some kind of storage. Everyday I have been out driving in the western community knocking on the doors of home with buildings in their back yards. I even stopped by 2 police officers who were parked on the side of the road and asked if they could put my flyer up at the police station ...they agreed.
Some pics of the siren. In the second one you can see how low the belt sets in the pulley. I saved one of the original bearing ... good thing!
