After checking the tool chest it turns out I don't have the file I need to modify the metal bracket as JackDN mentioned so I'll have to postpone the install until tomorrow.
@JackDN: Did you just file out the hole so that it lined up with the hole in the tailgate?
doczenith1,
I used a bench grinder to grind away a little of the metal adjacent to the short skinny section.
If I'm understanding you correctly what you did enables you to move the bracket back (towards the top of the gate) far enough so that the hole in the bracket lines up with the hole in the tailgate. My only concern would be that the bracket would try to rotate because the other end of the bracket is not tight against the tailgate pivot housing. Am I pointing to the correct location in the picture?

The factory enlarged the hole to align with the hole in the tailgate. It's easier to drill/elongate that hole.
What I did is to buy one for an 06 Ford SuperDuty then place the metal tailgate bracket like in the picture doczenith1 posted above ( bracket tight against round tailgate hinge) then drill the tailgate hole to meet the bracket hole. I didn't alter the bracket at all just the tailgate hole.
This thread should be on page one..This EZ Down is so cool..and in a world were $29 doesn't buy anything cool I thank all of you for figureing out how to do my EZ Down right.
Moderator - can you do a top-of-the-list, sticky post on the answer to the original question: what EZ Down product number do you need for a 2011 Superduty?

I don't know if that's such an easy question to answer. One model (902) will bolt right in but has a history of breaking and the shock is weak. The other model (901) needs some minor modifications but is more stout and has a stronger shock.
Yes, that's correct. I bought both and installed the older slower stronger style. I notched the bracket as I didn't have the heart to drill into the truck. It clears the the rubber stopper as well. Works good but falls sooooo slowly. I like that because I didn't drill the truck that I can consider installing the faster newer version and if it breaks, I have the stronger one as backup (or vice versa).
Oh, and if you notch the bracket, yes it will not fit tight against the hinge but the ends of the curve will contact the hinge and prevent it from twisting or rotating.
