I bought two yesterday at my local O'Reilly's, on was the 01 for the older trucks and the other was the 02 for my 2011. Both were the old versions for 19.99. The only difference between the two is the mounting bracket
for the tailgate itself. I did have to modify the rubber bumper on mine, and the instructions did not say to remove it - but the instructions for the 01 did. Thanks to this thread I knew what to look for, and a little judicious use of a hacksaw resulted in this:
Works great! Good news is my boyfriend's truck is a '97, and the other one fit his just fine. So now we have matching tailgate assists!
Mine was $19 also (reg price was $59). That squeak wasn't there before, but it isn't coming from the new hardware either. Must have something to do with coming down so slowly.
Anyone figure out what that squeak is? Mine is doing it now and doesn't seem to be coming from the ezdown hardware. Thought someone would know before I start spraying WD everywhere.

Isn't there a torsion spring inside the gate? I'd go ahead and spray selectively to you find out for me were it's coming from then grease it .
This thread just keep getting better. I can't wait for my new one coming this week. I just have to choose a way to alter the bracket to fit. Again I ordered one for an 2006.

We had the squeak on my 2011, a shot of WD40 on the passenger side tg hinge took care of it temporarily. Probably should lightly grease the inside of the rubber sleeve for a permanent fix.

OK found it. Right side hinge, just a little grease and squeak gone.

I got rid of the squeak tonight. Just a couple shots of white lithium did the trick (should last longer than WD40).
Just to clrarify, this one is the "new" style with the smaller shock and the ball-type mount. The "older" style has a bigger diameter shock, no rubber ring at the end and it uses a clip to secure the shock to the tailgate mounted bracket. You can see this in the picture a few posts above.
