It looks like you got the older one. That is how it is supposed to work. Does the place you bought it have more and do they have an online order system?
I found an EZ-Down kit that was for up to a 2006 Super Duty among the hatchback damper replacements at my local CKS parts store. It was branded differently on the package, but the shock says "Ez-Down" on it. It was the larger shock and I had to use the mounts that were in the kit and had to drill a new 5/16" hole to line up with my 2011 hole that I put the threaded unit into. I just reused the one I had installed for the first one. The tailgate goes down a lot slower now and seems to be a bit heavier duty. The new one was $29.95!
I oredered one of these on Ebay about 2 months ago. After installing it, the tailgate drops slowly, not quickly like the previous video or like others are describing. It appears that it mounts differently also. They replace the stud that holds the support cable with a souble stud on the truck and then use the hole on the tailgate to mount a threaded plug which holds the mounting point for the shock. I can now unlatch the tailgate and watch it slowly lower itsef with no sudden stop. Are you guys saying that this has changed? I don't remember it being made by DeeZee, but by EZ-Down. Are they different?
Just looked it up, they are made by stabilus and can be found at Stabilus.com
Duane, just read your post and watched your vid, mine is exactly like yours. You got a great price as I paid $45 for mine on EBAY.

Yes, the ones most folks are getting now have a mounting stud that goes directly into the expanding nut on the tailgate and the top is mounted to a stud in a plate that you place under the striker on the truck bed. The shock assembly is smaller. The change in the mounting points and the smaller shock make it dampen the tailgate fall a lot less. I found the older, larger kit today and now mine opens slower, much like the Tundra I had. I think DeeZee sells the same ones as others do. I would guess that the kits are made by the same supplier and different folks distribute it.
I had to remove mine today. After just 1 dozen openings the connection @ the tailgate bent. Guys, check this often so you catch it before it damages the tailgate.

The Stabilus is the brand I found at CKS Auto Parts. I got the older version with the bigger shock and a different mounting system. It seems these are a little heavier duty. The shock still has the EZ-Down brand on it.
