I purchased my first diesel May of last year, for no real reason other than I wanted it. I didn't use mileage & maintenance calculations to make the decision, although the F150 that I traded wasn't considered "fuel efficient" by any stretch of the imagination.(2011 Harley Davidson, 6.2L w / 3:73 gears) I only averaged about 13 MPG with it. But I kept my foot in the "loud" pedal too!
With the New truck, I average in the mid 14's, that's combined driving, I never really pay close attention to it.
I subscribe to the "to each their own" philosophy, I'm just happy that we have the choice. There's a market for both the gassers and oil burners, IMHO. The same argument goes on between the EB's and V8's on the F150 thread, I like both power plants, in both truck series!

There were some trucks up there last year that were very respectable. Actually, I think all of them were.

Yeah my neighbors Dodge Cummins. He was tuned. No gauges. After that he only had Fords. He had a 6.4 for awhile but has a F150 3.5EB right now.

Ha! Actually it's been a pretty good day of education for everyone that has come. It's good to see a truck in person doing some work and maybe even drive it. It's a truck swingers event.

That was pretty close to my thought process when I got mine. I wanted it to do everything (daily driver, weekend off-roader, occasional towing beast, and last forever) and knew it had to be a 7.3L. However, as my rig is aging, I hand calculate my fuel economy at each fill-up. If I see a big drop, I know it's time to grab a flashlight and find the problem between the tank and the injectors!

When I had my 7.3 it left me stranded about 5 times and rode home on the trailer behind my 5.4. Only two of those I would consider "break downs" though. Three of them were minor parts like for, glow plugs and cam sensor. The other was a broken valve spring and then ficm. I fixed the spring but was fed up with it by the time the ficm went out and just sold it. I like the 7.3 and wouldn't mind having another one someday, but I wouldn't have a newer one if you gave it to me.
