Im still waiting for the press conference from International where they anounce that they will be replacing their diesels, with Ford V-10's.................still waiting
It won't be just them. All farm equipment, and semi's will be switching over to gas. And they probably should. If they lower the BTU's in diesel much more, it will be lower than gasoline.
All the V10 has to do is down shift and it will pull harder, a down shift does not mean that it does not tow as well.
Downshifting doesn't mean it doesn't tow as well, but it uses more gas and puts more wear on the engine and tranny. I think the 3v v10 is very comparable to an OBS 7.3 at lower rpms and will do even better at higher rpms. I am very pleased with the power of my 7.3(which means I would also be pleased with a v10). My only complaint with the v10 is the mpg's. My OBS 7.3 gives me better low end power than the best v10 available and much better mpg's.

heh heh heh, I gotta agree with that one! Haven't seen a whole lotta threads about V10's leaving the owners stranded for no apparent reason. Which is why I bought one...
Thats my only complaint too, I ran it hard the last 2 fill ups and got 9.2 and 9.6 MPG.

On the other hand, the 7.3 does not have that problem either.
But just go look in the 6.0 and 6.4 forums...

This may surprise you, but I almost bought a new v10 back in 03. I had already picked it out, told the dealer I was going to take it and was on my way to the bank to pick up the money when my cousin called me and told me about another one I should come look at. His neighbor had just died and they were having an estate sale and practically giving everything away. That's how I got my 5.4. 2000 model truck, less than 10k miles and a 26 foot car hauler for 1/3 of what the v10 was going to cost me.
Quiet!..Had a GM diesel, sold it for a nice F150, 04 Flareside, and traded that because I wanted more towing power..I don't tow all the time, and have a 30 mpg car for most driving...so the V10 fit the bill..2 fill ups on the V10, all sorts of driving[no towing], 12.9 mpg, my F150 mpg was 15 mpg average over the 5 yrs I owned it...I think this truck rides better than the 150 on good road..Run over rr tracks and you know there is a lot more truck there...I like it...
Shame the estate sale truck was not a v10 or a 7.3, they just pull so much better than the 5.4.
Have you ever towed with a v10?
Base motor or not, you still got a great deal!
Oh yeah, I've towed with a 2v non PI and PI and 3v v10. I was looking at the v10 because it was right when the 6.0 came out. I couldn't get a dealer to order a 7.3 for me and I didn't want to be a guinea pig for the 6.0. I just happened to come across a v10 that was what I was looking for. Crew cab, manual, 4.10 gears, XLT with carpet delete.
I know I rag on my 5.4 a lot, but it's a good motor for what it is. For a small block, it does a good job. It's just that I'm comparing it to a 7.3, and it's going to lose that battle every time. It's not as powerful as my 7.3 and gets worse mpg's, so when I have both of them sitting in the driveway you know which one I'm going to choose to take.
I haven't been in this sub-forum in months, and I come back out of curiosity and see this at the top of the list. Sheesh...
227 pages and we have concluded that the winner is the 7.3 and the V-10. It depends on who you talk to as to who won! (That's no different then it was on page 1)
Now we're comparing the 5.4 to the V-10 and 7.3. The 5.4 is not looking good in this comparison.

Depends on which 5.4 and which v10, what set up and in what kind of comparison. I would take my 5.4 against Bill's v10 in a shoot out on a hill due to better rear end and tranny gearing and the power differential isn't that great between the two. He would beat me in a maintaining speed comparison since we wouldn't need to get the load rolling and he has better low end power.
With a smaller trailer, I would take my 5.4 in a shoot out over my 7.3 any day of the week. With bigger trailers it loses speed a heck of a lot faster than my 7.3 though.

It's just silly really... The ONLY reason the 7.3 was killed is the friggin' EPA. Just like in the 70s when they screwed up gas engines, they've now done it to diesels. Get your 7.3s while you can! It's the last unmolested diesel out there (besides the big C before they got screwed too)...
