I am not speaking for all 6.0's, but I believe the majority of the people that have maintained them and kept them stock have not had many problems with them. I have an 03 F-350 CC LB FX4 Lariat 6.0 and I love it. I have a Dodge with the V10 and it is a great engine, it just doesn't pull like the diesel does. I know they aren't apples to apples, but the Dodge is rated at 300hp and 450 lb/ft of torque, so it is very close to the 2000- 2004 Ford's. The mileage on the 6.0 is definitely an improvement, but I know the 7.3 is better yet. Just my $.02
Bill - I see about 8-9 around town and have seen no higher than 13 on the highway unloaded. It just rolled 160k and has been a great truck, I just prefer my Super Duty. Call me crazy but you just can't beat the sound of a diesel. I really do not need a diesel, but I want one.
Honestly, I just think it depends on what you are looking for in a truck, I have a PSD, and I love it, but I payed for the power and the life of my truck up front. If you want the power, maybe you don't want to spend the cash to get it.
Stinker diesel? I wouldn't know. The smell is behind me. Sorry to inconvenience you.
I will try not to offend you with the smoke as I go by.
My exhaust smells kind of like a propane BBQ grill. My wife even says she misses the diesel smell when she's driving her SUV (she's definitely a keeper ). My dad has a D-Max ('06 LBZ) and it has a real harsh smell to it.
I looked at the 6.0's and the 6.4's when I was looking to buy this last time... I even (not proud) looked at the Dmax and test drove a Cummins to see the diff. I obviously pulled out of the Diesels altogether when I went with the big gasser... but I feel as though I couldnt be happier that I did. I know that there are many that stand by the stock smokers and have never had an issue, I just cant see trusting that VVT to take me 1200 miles one way with the trailer and get me back without a $3000 - $5000 problem. I'd rather know upfront that Ill poor another $200 - $250 into the trip in fuel and get there and back without limping. My $0.02 doesnt mean a whole lot since this point (without looking Im sure) has been made in the previous 249 pages somewhere.
That said, I would love to have a diesel, I love the sound and I would love to be able to roll coal when I wanted... but the fact is that all the diesels since 2003 have undergone too many changes due to emissions and its far too tempting to mod them past the engineering. I really look forward to the Scorpion... I suspect that Ford is going to get this one right from mile 1 since their rep is on the line. They could blame navistar up until now, but going forward their butts are on the line. Ford has improved their passenger car lines dramatically, but I still think the bread is buttered by the truck sales and they cant afford to loose many of us.

i bought a 99.5 PSD and agree with that completely! only a completely arrogant narcissist (or someone completely unfamiliar with these trucks) would argue against the statement that an OBS HD with a 460 is a very stout truck in stock form, and with a full (banks, bassani, etc.) exhaust is even more impressive, and the only thing other than personal preference that can be held against it is the fuel economy. but i still like the sound, smell, and nature of my 7.3 diesel. i honestly wish i had one of each brand new in '97 to keep forever just to keep away from the new "technology" that i don't trust as much (although my dad's 5.4 F-150 has been just as good of a truck as every other ford half-ton he's owned). i'm honestly not nearly as impressed with the SDs compared to the OBS trucks, and i'm not as crazy about the mod motors as i am the pushrods. i fell in love with my first diesel pickup when i was 8 years old (1988 7.3 F250, ZF5R42, reg. cab... somewhat learned to drive on that one) but all the gassers we had since have been great trucks too. anyway, they're all good trucks, just personal preference. again, just going by out-of-the-box performance, there's really no wrong answer unless someone just wants to argue.

and that sums it up about right, which is why my 7.3 will be maintained and kept as long as possible, because it will probably be my last diesel. anyway, from one newbie to the rest, welcome aboard; you'll love it here!
