Is a 10:1 ratio acceptable in the auto manufacturing business?

Well, I'm not really defending it or bashing it. It's just a simple question. If that ratio is acceptable then I guess the 6.0 is defined by the industry as an acceptable engine. If that ratio is not acceptable then I think they screwed the buyers.

To be honest though, I am not a fan of V8 diesels.

Laugh!!!!

And Laugh again!

The original post does not even deserve a reply.

I figure the original poster was probably a fifteen year old kid that never has owned a truck, much less one for towing.

Let me guess, there will be a big press release from Freightliner saying they have a new gasoline engine that is going into their big rigs.

Sick teanager!!!!

Yep it's right there with the press release about a small displacement V-8 diesel engine they are putting in their "big rigs" now.

News flash freightliner has been using a v 8 diesel made by mercedes. About the 10 to 1 ratio. Hell i know 6 people with the v 10 and 4 wish they would have bought the psd. They said it has the low end but falls on its *** when you get to the high end. I know 3 guys who started hauling camper trailers after hurricane kat. To new orleans. One had a 99 7.3 the other had a 03 dodge with the 5.9 the last had a 02 with the v 10. All were one ton dually 4x4 with 4 doors. All had automatics. The dodge would beat them on take off. The v 10 was great up till 65. But in the end they could not keep up with the powerstroke on power or fuel milage. The powerstroke would walk away from them going down the interstate running 75. Now coming back empty the powerstroke was in the last place. I have owned one of each them style trucks and will say that i believe every word they are saying because i have been there.

Please provide a link where is shows Frightliner using a small displacement V-8 diesel in their "big rig" (i.e. heavy duty, not light or medium duty) trucks. Not saying they don't on other lighter duty trucks.

And don't get me wrong about the PSD. For the record I think the PSD is great engine and if my needs were different I would have bought one. I do not have any sort of chip on my shoulder about V10 vs. PSD. I do however have a problem when a small displacement V8 diesel is compared to a large displacement inline 6 diesel that is typical used in heavy duty/service applications. It's like saying a screwdriver is the same as a hammer because they both have handles.

PorchFarms, you have it wrong. The V10 lacks low end and has great top end power.

I would like to see a class 8 truck with a light duty diesel too.

I am just going by my past experience with the v10. I could hook it up to my gooseneck and it would start moving it up to 30 mph then it would start struggling. You could not even keep it at 55. The trailer weighs about 20000 pounds. But i can hook it up to any of my powerstrokes and you wont take off as fast but i can set my cruise on 65 and not worry about it. Now with the v8 diesels. Cat made what they called a 3208 that was used in some construction equip. And back in the 70s and 80s john deere and international produced tractors with v8s. One being the 1568 and one being the 8850. Inline 6s are by far easier to work on than a v8. And no freightliner does not put v8s in their trucks rated at 80000 but they do put them in their medium duty trucks. Everybody has their own opinion i base mine on what i have proven.
