Crewcab Only Thread.
I have lurked around here for years now and have a question...
Life finds me with a baby on the way and a garage full of a 1978 Crewcab Cummins conversion project. Its too long a story to type out here but reality has set its nasty hooks into me and I cant see getting back to this project anytime soon.
1978 Ford Crewcab Cummins Repower Project
After many years (and thousands of dollars) of part collecting. This was going to be my dream truck.
The base truck: 1978 F250 Ranger XLT Crew Cab Short Box. 429-4v, NP435 4 speed, 205 Transfer Case, 4:10 LS Dana 60 Rear 4:10 Dana 60 front, dual tanks, tilt wheel, racetrack moldings.
This is a solid rust free* truck that was bought for family use. It was not a crew truck and does not have the typical wear and tear associated with crew use. (Rust free is relative on the crewcabs, most will have rust on the cab seam around the drip rails and this truck is no exception. There is no cab corner, floor board, frame, or box rust)
The truck is stripped of the current gas driveline. The 429 runs like its on fire, and I mean that literally. It smokes so bad when running you think its on fire. A compression check showed the bottom end is tight so I think the valve guides are gone. Didn't buy the truck for its gas motor however so it didn't matter to me. If you don't want to do a diesel conversion you will need head work. (I mean that literally too, if you are willing to drive a truck that gets 8MPG on its best day at the current price of fuel YOU really need head work...)
The front axle was swapped in from a 1979 F350 Supercab. A Low mileage truck so its tight as can be.
Generally this was one of the best trucks I could find as a starting point. Its not a mint one owner truck, its been used hard at times and it shows. It is the best year of the 73-79 Fords and has the right stuff for the swap.
The "Truck" includes everything above plus the following:
37-12:50-17 BFG Radial All terrains on Aluminum wheels
A 6" Skyjacker lift kit (not installed)
A very clean front clip off a 79 Lariat
And probably $1K worth of misc parts including black door panes and the complete 5 volume factory service manual set.
I also have a set of NOS front doors in black primer and a spare set of rear doors.
The swap: I was intending to do a 6BTA Allison conversion using a divorced transfer case. That plan evolved into using a 4BT and a ZF5 5 speed married combination. As it sits I have the parts collected to do either.
1998 6BTA 5.9 Cummins Turbo Diesel with matching Allison AT545 4 Speed Automatic transmission
This motor and Tranny is out of a low (1800) hour F800 armored car chassis. I pulled these components myself intending to use everything in a swap. I have all coolers, mounts, linkages, adapters, etc. This engine was built for a Ford by Cummins with the hard to find rear low mount turbo and high mount A/C compressor... Hard to find and the best configuration if you want to run A/C. Also has a compressor for onboard air with the power steering pump attached.
It won't matter to everybody but the engine is Ford gray and has ford part #'s and a CPL tag. The parts are here to make this look like Ford built the truck in their factory. A nice detail is the Ford engineered shift adapter and quadrant display that bolts to the Ford column.
A few thoughts on this one. The AT545 is a direct drive transmission. With proper governer tweaking(4K GSK), 4:10's and 37 in tires you will have a top speed around 100MPH and a 2500 RPM cruise (at 65 MPH) This is a very good heavy towing calibration and would laugh at just about any trailer you could hook up. Would not be the best millage setup however so keep reading...
ZF5 5 Speed Overdrive and Ford Cummins Adaptation
I have everything to go between a 4BT or 6BT and a 205 T-case (Cummins adapter housing, flywheel, pressure plate, motor mounts, etc, including a rebuilt 205...). Spent a long time looking for this setup, a 4BT and these parts BOLTS IN where a 300 inline 6 used to live.
I could split the Allison and the 6BT and supply a 6BT bolted to the ZF5.
If you have read this far you are as much of a geek as I am and really deserve state paid mental care, that’s ok you are in good company.
4BTA3.9 complete turbo to pan.
This motor has 50K miles on it and will bolt up to many different transmission. I have a Ford adaptation, a Chevy adaptation, and an SAE #3 adapatation.
Ford Cummins manual adaptation
Everything to bolt a Cummins to a Ford small block manual tranny (Yes, any manual you can botl to a SBF you can bolt to a 2valve head B series Cummins… Put a Cummins in your Shelby Mustang…)
Chevrolet Cummins Automatic adaptation
Bolt any Cummins to any Chevrolet automatic, prefer a TH400 or 700R and you need to source the right converter
SAE #3 Flywheel Housing and flexplate
Many posibilities with this one, includes the proper front and side Cummins engine mounts for an overhung transmission
I have TONS of stuff, from heated Racor filters and heat exchangers for SVO or Biodiesel conversions to frame mounted battery boxes to get some weight off the front end…
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
hope someone in the area can save her at least for parts, she's a bit too far for me. WARNING !!! text in ad from current "owner" will make you sick...
Q: only gas tank is behind rear seat (back of cab). Is this normal for a F350 and this (77) year? no saddle tank?
I appreciate any input...
and no, it's not the CC on minneapolis CL...(previous post)
Thanks,
Charles
