76 crew cab body, 79 F-150 2wd frame, 351m, shortened bed. Its NOT done yet, body work needs to be done, paint, finish the bed. interior is somewhat together. needs drivers door, and fender to be installed. I did this swap in 2 days, with bunch of help and just finished it last night. its a blast to drive!!
NEXT plans, install dana 60 front, dana 70 rear, 35" toyo Mt on 17" wheels, divorced T-case, new drivelines and gearing. Im working on this RIGHT now. Its going to be a wheeling machine for this winter!
A LWB Highboy frame is 133 inch wheel base...a crewcab shortbed frame is a 150 inch wheel base....you will either have to stretch the frame or have a super super short bed....most people use a super cab 4x4 frame to do it...but it still requires a bit of fabrication work....good luck!!
So its doable; just need to shorten my bed 17" or so; Thanks for the reply "Fordtrucknut";
Also thanks for the pic's from "78150".
Well I guess the good news would be I can use my current bed as the donor.
Its in great shape.
How or are there any mod's to get the back protion of the crew cab to mount to the frame?
Also is there a tech article on this type conversion?
Any one have any real expirience stretching a crew frame to accomodate a long bed? I have made up my mind I would like to do this and transplant all the sheet metal minus the cab from my 78 ranger CS to the 78 crew. ANy builds here? There is so much crud in this thread it is near impossible to wade through it all.

Thats my plan is to turn my short bed into a long bed .I have stretched some semis so I think i can do pretty easily . If and when i start my truck i will takes pics for you..What my plan is i have a 3/4 ton long bed 4x4 frame that i will use the rear half of the frame on my short bed crew,and put the short bed piece back on the 3/4 ton and make it a 3/4 ton shot bed.
InfoFord did one, took a 2wd longbed crew and spliced in a 4wd f/e frame section to make it a 4wd longbed crew...I went to SC from NJ to p/u my 4wd longbed crew cab that was stretched by a previous owner, here is a pic, you can see the plate that was bolted on the outside as a re-inforcement to the splice, being that I am doing a frame off resto I had a section of plate steel bent to fit inside the frame rail so it will not be seen and add re-inforcement to the splice
new tires:
38.5 swampers. pretty used and old. centers are decent but the side lugs are bald. and i have a spare 35 i got free. got all the tires free, and the wheels free. cant argue. im trying to sell my dirt bike so i can spend the cash on the truck lol.
well I worked on my crew cab today. I spent all day lifting the rear end. I ended up with around 10" lift. I Used 1/2 leaf springs, 4" blocks, and then i did a shackle flip. I welded up some brackets to support the shackle brackets. it worked good. its on 38s and its HUGE. Tomorrow i plan to swap my front axle. putting a dana 60 front end, and lift. its going to be a huge project for tomorrow!
