Oh, I'll be looking to them when I resume the 302 in a Jeep project. That's hilarious. I'll leave room on the shop safe for that artistic & literary jewel.
FTE is messing up tonight, so if this gets posted twice, Sorry.
I made a shim so I could use the two piece fuel pump eccentric with the double roller timing set. I was gonna use a peel washer on the cam nose, but that wouldn't work right. I measured that I needed at least .045" shim in order for the outer ring of the eccentric to float. So I used some 16 ga sheet steel, which is .062" thick. I did a charcoal rub of the original cam gear's eccentric boss, then cut out a template. The two piece eccentric now floats as it should. I think this worked out very well.
My head gaskets finally arrived today. Cometic MLS .030". I could bolt on the heads, timing cover, oil pan, damper, and timing pointer this weekend. But I'll need to sit and stare at the short block for a while, just to make sure everything is squared away before I start crushing gaskets. I may also put the degree wheel back on and reconfirm cam timing. I'd hate to bolt up that stuff, then have to remove it. Head gaskets cost $180!!!!
I started buttoning things up over the weekend. The cylinder heads, timing cover, and oil pan are torqued down. The oil pan support rails I made have worked out nicely. Headers are bolted up temporarily so I could decide how I want to attach the Lokar dipstick tube. I'll have to make a bracket. The intake manifold is not the one I want to use, and is just sitting there for show. I have an Edelbrock RPM Air Gap intake manifold on backorder. I'll give it a month, maybe two, then I'll bolt on the one I've got. It'll work, but the ports are tiny compared to the ports in the heads. Lots of power left on the table.
Pushrods are on order. They measured out at 7.975" for intake, and 8.025" for exhaust. Next week I'll have my welding mentor add the billet filler bung to the driver's side valve cover. That'll look slick! Now that I've got the heads torqued down on the .030" MLS gaskets, the compression ratio figures are, 9.95:1 static compression ratio, and 7.82:1 dynamic compression ratio.
Building some real horse power there brother. Looking real nice. On the Jeep 302. I'd go Kaiser V-6 for the old school Jeep touch .
I've already got the 302 built. And I'm sure the Jeep's current 4.0 Liter I6 is capable of more torque than a Buick V6. I'm looking forward to getting back on that project one day, and for reasons you wouldn't think.....I'll have a Jeep I6 to rebuild.
I was just out in the shop cleaning up, and remembered to check to see if the Keith Fulp timing pointer was correct. It's 3 degrees off. And because it's angled, it'd be too short if I trimmed it to fit. I like the look of the aftermarket adjustable pointers, but I don't trust them to stay put. More fabrication coming up. Geez, this engine project has been more fabrication intense than others. But at least I've got a nice timing pointer to use as a template. It all works, cause since the harmonic balancer is stainless steel, I'd kinda rather have a carbon steel pointer, so I can black oxide finish it for contrast.
Just don't seem right calling it a Buick V6. Kaiser Jeep Kaiser V6

It does sound weird. But then again, I get anxiety just hearing "V6".
I talked to Summit and a few other sources today about the Edelbrock Air Gap intake manifold. Edelbrock keeps bumping the availability date to the right. Right now they're saying mid Novemeber. So as soon as my pushrods get here, I guess I'll bolt up the Edelbrock Performer that I have on hand. Crap.
I have faith in the "Jedi Master Scrappy" and your buddies here at FTE to track down a Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap model 7566 for you Mike
Thanks, Red. I shoulda thought of that before. If Edelbrock keeps playing games, I'll start begging folks here. For now I think the one I've got will be fine. I did find a source on ebay. They have several 7566's for the bargain price of $1400.
Fedex delivered my exhaust pushrods today, so I took a break from hurricane prep to install them and the rocker arms. I may have to strap Scrappy and myself to the engine when the hurricane hits.
