Do not tell Penny! Can't believe I missed that. I woulda cropped it out if I noticed it.
What are you doing, swapping axles, bushing replacement? What's the temp up there right now? It's 99 here. No more strenuous outdoor work for me today.
Before doing that this afternoon, I helped my friend get some hay in. This morning he switched from bailing round bails, to bailing square bails. I haven't thrown square bails on a trailer since I was in my early 20's. It sucks! I asked him if he knew he was square bailing round bail Bahia grass. It took a few seconds for that to penetrate, then he laughed so hard that I thought he was gonna need oxygen.
You crack me up I warned you that an open rebellion by your toes could send your feet in two entirely separate directions. Thanks Mike I needed that both the laughter and the memories of a day haying and Grandma's cold home made drinks waiting for us in the spring house when we were through.
On the crank gear I'll have to think on that

I did enjoy loading square bails again. I'm no good at it anymore, but like you, it brought back a lot of good memories.
Yep, I thought of that, and read some on it. If I needed to, I could advance the cam timing with the crank gear since it has 4 degree advance/retard keyways. This whole thing actually has no impact, because the camshaft degree'd where I wanted it in order to hit my DCR of less than 7.8:1. If I advanced the camshaft, it'd blow my pump gas plan.
The temp is hot hot hot. I am pulling that full width Dana 44 (high pinion) 1/2 axle from a 79 parts Bronco and it is going under the son in laws Bronco. His cobbled up and janky installed 76 F250 low pinion (full width) Dana 44 axle needs to go. They had to leave the dvrs side leaf spring pad in it because it is cast in the housing. And that snowballed a lot of other cobbery. Besides I am sure I snapped a passenger side long shaft on our last trip out.
This new Dana 44 is getting 4340 chromoly axle shafts (inner and outer), with CTM joints, a locker and matching R&P to the rear ratio. Anyone knows you buck hay with a long sleeve shirt, head cover, and a bandana. Do these goobers not know what hay rash is? You doing 2 or 3 string bales? I would rather pick up 8 at a time with a tractor (with an a/c cab) or go big square bales, than doing the ol buck and chuck. Unless I am bucking against the rain weather rolling in and getting a nickel a bale that hits the trailer.
This stacker knows what is going on, but that trailer is going to be hurting.
These guys have a long way to go.
Yep. I knew the gear was retarded. Camshaft grind makes up for it, according to my degree wheel. I may advance it 4 degrees. Right now the intake valve closes at 71 deg ABDC (confirmed), and that gives me 7.48:1 DCR. If I advance it 4 degrees, that will theoretically have the intake valve closing at 67 deg ABDC, and give me 7.74:1 DCR. Think I'll head out there now and advance it, then confirm with the degree wheel.

Ok, I "advanced" the camshaft 4 degrees, and I whoop'd out the degree wheel to get all my specs confirmed. And I was wearing flip-flops. And the old 3.85" crankshaft is still standing upright.
Degree wheel confirms that the camshaft now matches Lunati's cam card when "advanced" 4 degrees. It's now at 106 degree ICL. The IVC @ .050" is 41.5 degrees ABDC. And IVO @ .050" is 9 degrees BTDC. So, with a .040" head gasket, I should have 9.84:1 SCR, and 7.75:1 DCR.
Shizzle sticks! I broke a ring. Had to order a new set. And I ordered an adjustable ring compressor. All I've ever used is bore specific solid tapered ring compressors. I've heard that with those things you can break a ring on the way down, and not know it. Well it happened, but I caught it. Spent the last hour with a loupe, checking the piston. One teeny tiny nick. I stoned it out. I hate getting aluminum embedded in my stones. No more tapered ring compressors! From now on, I want the rings fully seated before the piston moves down.
Good, thanks Mike How you doing after the haying? This last page is looking a little like "Farmers Only" .com. LOL
Slow and steady wins the race here. Nice job Mike !

I'm done tossing hay bails. But I'll be disc'ing very soon. I was hoping to get the long block finished before I have to start breaking dirt, but that ain't gonna happen. The new rings won't be here for a few days. It's no big deal. I won't have time to install the engine before idiot season starts, so I've got until end of January to finish this build. I certainly do not plan to drag it out that long though.

The Winter is when I get some of my best shop work done. When we built the shop I put in radiant floor heat so I could work there in Winter. That was the best decision I could have made. We have a building that houses a would fired boiler that stores BTUs and the house and shop pull heat from there when were home and I have the time feed it otherwise the 90,000 btu high efficiency propane boilers in the house and shop will take care of demand. It gives me some energt independence with the wood given we have it in abundance here in our woods and the surrounding area.
I always liked tractor work. We have a Ford 9N to play on here. How many cuttings of hay you get each year?

I don't do hay or livestock here. Just timber and wildlife planting (idiot season). But I've got plenty of friends with hay fields. I think they can get 3-5 cuttings per season. I too enjoy being out in the tractor. I get a lot of thinking done. And the best part is, it's very hard for anyone to disturb me while I'm out working fields.
