On a side note, my grandfather was a gun smith. His favorite rifle was his custom lever action Savage 300. When I got out of the Army I bought a 270 Weatherby Mark V that I still hold as my favorite.
Ahhh, you're gazing into my deepest thoughts. I have done some daydreaming about this engine's future. I can see the 501 getting pulled from the truck one day, and put into a 2wd vehicle. I'd love to have it in a Galaxie, Fairlane, Falcon, Comet, LTD, Thunderbird, Bumpside, or Dentside. And the whole build would pivot around an American Powertrain Tremec Magnum 6.
With all the Crown Vic front ent conversions any of those would be a thing of beauty. You'd get in and wouldn't stop until you hit water.

I would have liked your grandfather. I've bought & sold a few Savage 99's over the years. Haven't held one in decades. I have had them in 250 Sav, 300 Sav, 308 Win, and 303 Brit. I wish I had kept all of them. At the time, I was only interested in pinpoint accuracy. Most 99's I've seen would shoot around a corner. But they are intricate masterpieces of machining and mechanical engineering.

Even better, companies like QA1 can supply full aftermarket front suspension. I'd definitely have to do something like a Crown Vic or aftermarket front end swap. Nothing wrong with a 9" rear under a street rod, as long as you do something to mitigate axle wrap. Or,...get really stupid and put a Mustang IRS under it.
Yes, she is well schooled in firearms handling. She's watched me barrel a few receivers too. But her most effective trigger finger use, is to hang one claw in my nipple if I hit the snooze button in the morning. She's an evil genius!
I forgot this...I got the rotating assembly ordered today. He didn't do the order yesterday, because he wanted to research and make sure the pistons I requested would work with the Trick Flow cylinder heads. Good man! The parts should be here in two or three weeks. They didn't have a 4.140" crankshaft, so I had to get a 4.150" crankshaft. Now it's gonna be a 502 instead of a 501. I like the sound of "five-O-one". Guess I'll have to practice saying "Five-O-two" in the shower, instead of singing Neil Diamond and Barry Manilo tunes.
It's the "2" that I'm having problems with. But I like your idea. How bout, "Five Nary Bi"? Or Roman numerals, "DII" / "Dee-Two"? I've always admired Finland. How bout "Viisi-O-Kaksi"?
Hey guys, thought i'd pop in and say how much intel im gathering from you folks already, Ranger140892 found me in the rubble on the ford460.com site and invited me here (thank god). Has anyone installed a post 79 460 in this thread? particularly a D9TE-AB with D3VE-A2A heads? I have a friend who just pulled that engine to go back to a 351W. And is willing to part ways with it for a price I cannot refuse. Here's a picture of my dentside I'd gotten from my uncle for a few hundred dollars, i think i got a deal! I bought this yellow 77 dentside and a 76 blue long bed with a 390 in it for $1500. Recently sold the blue one for 2500 to a local. Anyways, thanks for having me, im excited to learn from you all.
Glad you're here! That's a very good looking truck.
There won't be many if any install differences between your D9 and my D1 engine. D1's are internally balanced, and D9's are externally balanced. Slight deck height differences, piston compression height, and combustion chamber differences. That's about it. Since you have an automatic transmission, you should get schooled on choosing torque converters. I'd guess that a 460 would benefit from a higher stall converter than what your 351M's C6 has.
