Yukon Grizzlies. They're basically identical to a Detroit. Only reason I went with them was the cost at the time I bought them. I agree with having an on-demand locker like an ARB, but those were even more expensive. I had to make concessions.
My only complaint with them has less to do with the brand or quality of the lockers, as they seem to be great, but more to due with having a manual tranny. Because of the play in the teeth of the lockers you have a lot more play throughout the entire driveline, especially when stopping and going. I'm pretty sure that'd be much less of an issue with an automatic as the torque converter would probably absorb a lot of what I feel with my NP435. Can't beat granny gear in 4-low though.
You got that right. I love my transmission. 6.32:1 first gear is awesome. I've got 3.50 diff gears, and 32" tires, so my first gear is useable. Several years ago, I had a T18 in a F250 with 4.11's. First gear was just there to weight down the transmission.

Yeah I only use 1st off road or if I want to just idle in gear through a slow moving drive through. lol. I have 4.56's with 35's and 1st is 6.68:1.
Is it really that much different than the stock piece? I remember looking at that one when I was doing my swap and I was comparing locations of the stud and the bolt holes to my factory bracket trying to see if there was a difference. It just looked like a replica of what I already had, but shinier and new... and without the hairline cracks. I mean, that's great if it works, I just didn't know at the time if it was different.
yep rotating oil filter, highboy,,, my original start up,,, ,,caught that oring leaking right away
I had that same issue with mine. It was leaking pretty bad from that oring/washer setup. I replaced them and clocked my adapter in a much better direction and haven't had a problem since, cross my fingers. Mine was off a mid-80's 460 if anyone needs to look for a factory one.

Did you need it? For frame clearance? I'll start looking for one. Ford Performance makes a 90 degree, clockable adapter. A 45 like those originals would be better.

No. The 460 that was built was frankensteined from two engines. It was a 75 top end and like an 86 bottom end. The bottom end already had the adapter on it. You have to switch a fitting on the block in order to attach the filter straight to the block, which is what I was considering, but when I clocked the adapter to have the filter basically pointing straight down I decided to just use it. There should be enough room to have the filter coming right off the block.
Good news. I'll take some measurements from crank centerline to oil filter boss on 400 and 460 today. I've always used the K&N 3001 filter, which is kinda long.
You guys have made this a really good thread. Thank you, Doosenberry, Lafermedavid, Rich, Frank, 440, Mathew, Flowney, Redroad, and Scotty (Mad Porter) over at 460ford.com.
Don't go getting all awkward feeling. I'm not asking any of you out on a date. Except maybe you, Rich.
Doosenberry and Lafermedavid, what flywheel and clutch did you guys choose? I'm thinking about going with L&L's package. Looks like an easy way to go. I'm not especially thrilled about having the flywheel drilled for their clutch only, but I can live with it. 429/460 Heavy Duty Clutch Flywheel Assembly (landlproducts.com)
yea the bracket was different then my original 360,made everything dial right in,,,,,painted it black,,,Yea L&L Fly wheel and clutch,,,,,to many horror stories with 180 tooth,,,,,,it fell in place sweet with the 351m bell housing and Block plate spacer ,,,,power master mini starter yea and that clock able filter napa gold it lays in that frame sweet with the headers .perfect
Looks like @lafermedavid has the setup. No fuss no muss.
I used the l&l clutch/flywheel kit as well for pretty much the same reasons. I have the factory 351M starter on it right now though which works just fine. I have a PMGR starter to put on it sometime. Also using factory exhaust manifolds right now as well. At the time, I wasn't ready to swallow the cost of the l&l shorties which is what I wanted. Eventually I'll go there.
I reckon I oughta call L&L Monday and get that flywheel/clutch kit ordered. The machine shop will need the flywheel when balancing the crank. I've got a Powermaster mini high torque starter. Love it. I would use it on the 460, but I'm gonna keep the truck operable until the day I stab in the 460. So, I'll need to buy a starter for the engine test stand. And I will most likely buy the L&L headers. Hopefully no issues, but Russell @ 460 EFI Guys said I might have to pie cut a header tube. That'll all get worked out on the engine stand, before it goes on the test stand.
I'm also going to fabricate my own exhaust system. Never done a complete system before. I plan to run 3" pipe, into a Magnaflow two in-two out muffler.
Well that sucks on the l&l headers. Lol. I might have to swap mounts and pull out my un-modded pivot bracket. I want chassis exit headers for my Bronco and selection is limited and I'm not a fabricator so I'm not going to be able to cut and weld headers to fit. Rut roh. Lol.
