Can you braze to stainless steel like can be done with the aluminized steel of OEM CAC pipes?

Pulled the CAC pipe this afternoon.

Interesting to see that the powder coating had slipped on the pipe. A bunch had filled up the bead roll indent and I could actually see where the coating was extended past the end of the pipe.

Cleaned it all off from the clamp location and then finished it off with an 80grit to scarify the surface hoping for a better bite with the boots. Going to reassemble with hairspray as well.

Ready to go back together.
Going to hold off on the welding. He seemed quite reluctant because of possibly burning the powder coating.

Powdercoating is a plastic that melts under heat. The heat of the intake temps must have softened it.

Try the copper ring in the groove method then if the welder doesn’t want to weld nubs on.

Love your prep on the pipes! Looks grippy. That plus hair spray and go quasi-ape on the clamps and you're golden imo.

Sucks that the pretty blue coating slides on the pipe. Maybe that one was not cured properly.

I’ve sent in a warranty request to Sinister to see what they say. Only showed them pictures of the failure. Nothing about removing the coating and prep.

I will be sure to post up their response.

I just got off the phone with Sinister Diesel.

They were extremely surprised to see the pictures that I had sent. He went back to the production department and showed them the failure mode. He hasn't had a chance to talk with the powder coating technician yet.

They are replacing the Pipe, Both hot side boots, and all 4 clamps. They are producing a new pipe for me and will be taping off the boot locations so the boot is onto the stainless pipe instead of the powdercoating.

Has anyone ever tried Mercruiser exhaust bellows adhesive? It seems it would be perfect for this.

Just got back home from a 2 night out of town trip.

Sitting on my porch was a package from Sinister.

Even though they are based in Cali they are not CARB compliant.

As promised they have taped off the clamp location for the new pipe delivered. This one is going on the shelf for now. Gonna run the one I prepped and if all is well then this one goes onto marketplace to recoup some of my cost.

Too bad my camping season is over. Won’t find out until spring.

Question about the hairspray usage.

Do I spray the pipe and boot then clamp them when still wet, or allow the hairspray to dry and then assemble and clamp.

I know when installing grips on dirtbikes we spray a shot of paint into the grip. The wet paint helps it to slide on and holds it fast once dry.
