I tried that paint last year on my CAC tubes and it sucked. Sandblasted, primed, painted, satin clear coat and it would scratch off with a fingernail a week later. Had them powder coated after that waste of money.
I used Evapo-Rust on the manifolds followed with a brass wire brush and they stayed rust free until I painted them with Rustoleum 2,000F. I'd say wait a year but with my progress, I'd give it two.
My history indicated chemically rustproofing works better then blasting (mechanical) to remove the chemical process of oxidation. If you go the vinegar route it just flash rusts.
I was looking at reviews (on Amazon) for Rustoleum recently and they were mixed results, but one never knows how well they executed the prep and cure process. I figured a wire wheel or cup brush would be the easiest way to knock off the heavy rust but your comment makes me think following up with Evap-Rust would be a good idea. I have a gallon jug of it bought years ago.
Great thread! Thanks for all the pics and updates.
You're welcome and there's more to come. UCF Machine Shop called and my rebuilt heads are ready for pick up. I'm going to get them Monday morning and I'll post a few photos Monday evening.
For the sake of repeating myself, personal experience and understanding of diesels has led me to believe this and do so hardcore. I'd MUCH rather buy a well maintained, higher mileage, and harder worked diesel than a low mileage "creampuff" (insert puking here). The 7.3 and the 6.0 do NOT like to sit.
Given other items checked out, what's the upper miles of the 6.0 that we should just stay clear off? I read somewhere 270k miles was the designed average major rebuilt. However, I am looking for responses from experiences here.
Nice support stands. Do high temp paints hold up to the heat of diesel exhaust manifolds? Can't stand the rust on mine.
For high temp coatings I was thinking of using these guys for the manifolds when it comes time to take it apart. I would also be doing the outer surfaces
of the turbine side of the turbo with the heat reflective coating.
HTM101, Looking good! When you get those heads can you post a pic of the head surface so we can see the placement of the ring. KDD claims they figured out the specific placement of the ring so I'd like to compare. Appreciate it.
