It's in my closet at the moment.

Had a problem with the brakes this morning on the idi , rear brakes decided to lock up in the rain and it went sideways almost into the back of a 16' f150 when he slammed on brakes in front of me. Now they don't seem quite right, pedal is lower and softer than it should be.

I'm wondering of you may have a wheel cylinder or axle seal leaking, and have contaminated the brake shoes.

Pedal is low and soft, guessing rear brakes need adjusting, but also might be a vacuum leak involved. Not loosing any fluid.

Being out of adjustment could explain a low, soft pedal, but I don't think that would do much far as locking up. But I've sure seen/heard of stranger things.

Never lock up like that unless they get wet? Tried different brake shoes, no difference. It was some bad weather.

Maybe there was a thin layer of rust on the rear drums, that would help explain the brakes locking up.
It's sure worth taking the drums off and getting a good look in there and see if you do have an issue.

That's the plan.

The Ranger will lock the rears on the first and second application after it sits out in the rain. The shoes bind when wet.
The pedal will get hard on the IDI if the vacuum drops.

1. Rear brakes locking up - Contaminated shoes or adjustment.
2. Low pedal - Low\Contaminated fluid
3. Soft pedal. -leak \RABS

I agree with Bob and your initial idea. take a look at the drums and clean them out. Remember brakes use asbestos, and you don't really want to breathe that stuff in. I'd also closely inspect the rear wheel brake cylinders, for leaks.

Does the pedal firm up when you pump it with engine (vacuum off). Does it then leak back down to the floor or does it stay hard\tight?

Brakes out of adjustment make the cylinders use more fluid, so they can cause a low/ soft pedal, tried unplugging the rabs, didn't change a thing. Pulling them off here in a bit, had to put the atv back together and get it out of the shop.

Brakes were way out of adjustment, Need to get some cables and see if I can get the self adjusters working. Have a wet wheel seal on one side, but was just barely wet enough to see, both sets of shoes and drums were dry and clean. Gotta get a scotseal for it, but otherwise stops on a dime now.

Well yesterday the little brother ended up with 2 flat tires after he slid off in a mud hole that someone had boobytrapped with a home made spike strip. He says he was trying to avoid (you could atleast see some slide marks) on the side of one of the roads we were hunting on yesterday. So I ran home got 2 of my old tire/rims, my impact and a jack to change those tires out, in the mean time I found a very bad rear axle bearing. They got that pulled out today to find that he needed a new axle shaft due to the bearing being that bad. We located a used one at a local JY for a $100 using Car-part, they got to call about that tomorrow morning and go get it pop a new bearings on it, a new race, seal and new brake shoes on the rear.

Damn, booby trap spike trips, that is pretty ugly. Sounds like you stayed busy.

That sucks. I've seen fishing line strung across trails. Holes dug then covered up. Trees dropped across trails. Rocks piled up. All kinds of stupid stuff.
