Finally! Progress! Pistons I ordered a month ago are just now on there way, Ron at Hypermax was having a hell of a time finding .020 over rings, but had success finally and should be here this week. The block will be bored next week and then they can get the long block put together. I still am on the hunt for a set of 6.9 heads, and still need studs and gaskets, and my cam and injectors from R&D and I will have a complete motor. Then I will be waiting on a turbo, PCS controller, adapter plate, and transfer case to be on the road. I ordered fuel system parts and they got here today, and more to come tomorrow. The fuel regulator I ordered says for gasoline only, but as far as I can tell all of its parts are aluminum. So what should it hurt? It never specified online if it was for gas or diesel.
Austin, We may be able to supply you rings but would need to know your bore and ring groove dimensions. We service a lot of diesel stuff so we can most likely help. We can as mentioned modify you existing rings to gapless as well we usually do the 2nd groove ring in that type of application though some prefer the top ring. The ring must be flat on the bottom so we can not do a full keystone type on rectangular or 1/2 keystone.
gapless piston rings? i have never heard of such black magic.
how do they hold up?
They hold up pretty well from what I have read. The better seal can supposedly improve horsepower by sealing better as well. Seems like a lot a of Cummins guys and even PSD guys run them...

I am pretty sure it is the second ring you want to send to them. Bronco78idi used those same exact rings on his build and he sent off his second rings to them.
That's my progress on the fuel setup, does anyone know if I should run the pump after both filters or if I can just run it through the 100 Micron? The secondary is a 2 Micron. The painless wiring kit was a dream to install, and its a clean setup, I ran the power through the auxiliary tank fuse so it is on all the time in the run position, even while the truck is cranking.
Pistons are at the shop so the block can get bored and I'm going to try to balance my rods tomorrow afternoon so the shop can get my crank balanced. If I can get a cam and the bearings for the rotating assembly, I should have a longblock by mid July.
88, I talked to my machine shop guys and he said its 50/50 on the gapless rings. "Some guys swear by them, some swear at them, just probably another $250 to try" were his exact words. So I'm passing on them for now.
One thing to think about is that diesels are different than gas engines as far as rings go. Do some research before you totally make your decision. A lot of Cummins guys run them with good luck and an IDI shouldn't be any different. Just some food for thought before you put your engine together...
looks nice where did you get all of the stuff to make your filter set up.
I need to make a couple filters, but I was thinking of going 10 to 4 micron
I noticed that you didn't have any loom on your wires, they might rub through were they come through frame
My other thought if the truck is going to be used off road, you might want to put some protection around the filters, to keep rocks and sticks from breaking them off.
I got all the filter stuff from Amazon, I can get you numbers if you want. Pump and regulator and wiring kit from summit. Then just some channel steel and 1 1/4" conduit straps to hold the pump. I wanted insulated straps but couldn't get them from the local hardware so these will work I spose. And I didn't have any loom last night so I just put everything where I wanted it to loom later. I will price these gapless rings and see. My budget is just getting blown way out of proportion with everything. That's why my progress is getting so slow haha
