That's my progress on the fuel setup, does anyone know if I should run the pump after both filters or if I can just run it through the 100 Micron? The secondary is a 2 Micron. The painless wiring kit was a dream to install, and its a clean setup, I ran the power through the auxiliary tank fuse so it is on all the time in the run position, even while the truck is cranking.
Pistons are at the shop so the block can get bored and I'm going to try to balance my rods tomorrow afternoon so the shop can get my crank balanced. If I can get a cam and the bearings for the rotating assembly, I should have a longblock by mid July.
88, I talked to my machine shop guys and he said its 50/50 on the gapless rings. "Some guys swear by them, some swear at them, just probably another $250 to try" were his exact words. So I'm passing on them for now.
Austin, I come from the 2.3T world, and the reputation of the gapless rings is not so swell around there... That being said, its interests me to test them... However, Im not so sure I wanna take the chance... I think a solid gapping job (spend the hours it takes to do it right) will be as fruitful as gapless rings...I think this is one of the most important parts of building an IDI...Bottom line.
I found this. Elite Diesel is big in the Ford diesel market and they use gapless rings on their stroker kits for the 6.4. I would think the benefit is there on diesels if they are using them. Sorry to bring this up again. I just came across it on accident and figured I would post it. Lol. Anyway here is the link...
Getting the gapless rings done cost $90. Its a tough choice and I might get on cummins forum to see what they think. But considering the fact I have never even heard of them until you brought them up 88, I am still skeptical. I tell ya what, I do half and half and report back to everybody with the data
Well my pistons have been shaved for a couple weeks now and I am waiting to send them out to get coated. The rods I tried to balance, but gave up and am having the shop do it. I finished my fuel setup. And o am happy with the results, should work really well for me I hope.
If it looks like I am running the pump with no filter that's because there is a 143 micron fuel strainer from a JD 8310 tractor from work first. This poor farm truck! The machine shop says still a couple weeks, and I'm getting pretty antsy. It will probably be longer because 4 Play (gas pulling truck, anybody ever heard of it?) Just lost a motor and my shop is their sponser. Oh well I will wait patiently I guess.
I add my one cent to this debate. I think as Justin that corectly made gap rings are as good as gapless. I have couple friends at motorsport companies here and they dont use them, never even asked why. And they are building like 300hp out of a 2 liter turbo diesel racing engine, doesnt start without ether compresion as really good gas engine, runs like dead when cold but once the turbo is on the boost they run like hell. I would go with the gap ones, when engine warm the gap is almost tight.
Well after messing around with my pistons I finally got them back and got them to the shop. I should have an assembled short block by the end of next week, if I can get my cam by then. Then on go the heads and everything else and I should be able to get the motor running N/A for a test run. Then I have to wait for a turbo and PCS to put the truck back together. SO much waiting. I did start on the fuel tank however, far from done.
And got my wiring harness out to redo the engine bay
I'm sending out an SOS to anyone who might have a wiring harness for the engine bay, I'm going to try here before making a new SOS thread. Mine is so tattered I would love to get a new one, and while moving the truck across the shop the harness headed to the back wrapped themselves up in the front yoke. Its pretty ugly. So I would like to have a fresh start. Anyone who could help PM me, let me know.
The fact that its reaching harvest season and my truck isn't done is scaring me. Mostly because I won't have it ready before corn is off, so I won't have the senior pictures I want! To think this was only a summer project, HA! What did I get myself into...
And what return line kit is the best, I did not like the one I got from DPS last time.
Sorry Austin, Ive been having issues keeping up with orders, the cam has been on the shelf, and Ive had your sticks half done for about a week. Ill finish them this weekend, and get your order to you so you can get this thing assembled.
This is all the farther I got tonight, had to go to an appreciation dinner and the alignment pins I need are rusted in the old heads, anyone know of anywhere to get those? All that I know I need right now is an oil pump, injector return lines, cam, injectors and intake gasket, just ran out of coin. Cam should be here this week so by sunday I should be able to wrap it up, pretty exciting for me!
Your injectors are as good as I can make them, popping at 2300psi... However the rate is pretty damn fast, so you will have a set that delivers the fuel quickly... And that is what you are going to need above all... One thing I can guarantee... They are far better than when they left DPS .....
