Truck is running. I switched the ip gear and fired it this morning. I need a crossover pipe but I did drive it today. Loud as hell, but none the less the truck I remember it to be. Runs much smoother and starts, literally, instantly, it's simply amazing. Somehow both power steering belts broke today as I was taking the truck on a tour around the field. I guess it's a good thing we weren't on the road!

Well a little update after 500 miles, truck runs very well, very smooth and it no longer seems to knock unbearably, it just ticks right along like a psd kind of. Pulls pretty hard in the higher rpms, (compared to before) and starts very well. I'm not sure if I believe the cold starting with no glowplugs, once you start it once you could do without but not in the mornings. This thing has got me wishing I could order that 366 but I'll have to be patient, shop comes first, been working steadily to get that insulated and the in floor heat hooked up.

Oh and I got to thinking for my intake, I think I'm going to use an 03-07 Cummins intake grid heater and intake horn ontop of my intake. This will get me some more heat, save some gp's and shouldnt really be too bad, I have yet to take any measurements because I don't make friends with, those people haha

I can honestly tell you that both of my cummins fired up at -30 and below with just that intake grid when I was stationed up in Alaska (some times I couldn't plug it in for a few hours at work). My Duramax, however, was a turd.

I've thought about that to and think it's a great idea. Good luck I'll be paying attention if you do.

I've heard those grid heaters are the cat's *** when it comes to cold starts, and they don't burn out like glow plugs, but they use a crap ton of battery juice. If you are thinking of running a grid heater AND glow plugs, you had better plan for it power wise so you have enough left to turn the thing over! I am curious to see how this works out for you...

I think a grid heater is the way to go. As far as the cummins cold starting, i could be wrong, but i think the size of the cylinder plays a factor in cold starts, aka bigger starts easier.

I agree with the grid is better than glow plugs, my brother has an 02 and 90 dodge and the 90 with the grid, will start on colder days without being pluged in and it has more miles than the 02

Cummins always seem to start good, they don't need the grids from what I have had experience with. But the stories of idis without gp's starting fine, I don't believe.

I've really been second guessing myself this week about the 5r, it would be cool and unique, and VERY doable, just not sure if that's what I want at the moment. I really want to do the zf6 swap.

Yes. Bigger cylinders have a greater volume of air being compressed. During cold starts, the cylinder walls act as a heat sink robbing the fuel of the energy needed to combust. Larger cylinders mitigate the issue.

Direct injection plays a big role in cold starting as well.
