Matt,
I DID get to see my timing chain and it did seem a little slack with about 65k on it.
I would have changed it if I had more money and time.
I checked the slack on mine last night by rocking the engine by the balancer bolt. After the engine has been run, there is ZERO slack in the chain now. Oh, that old Cloyes C-3057K chain that stretched out says MADE IN USA right in the chain.
Video of it running with the valve covers off. It's all quiet now, the valvetrain has a very tiny almost unable to be heard amount of noise, sounds like a very mild solid lifter cam. Sounds good to me! sorry about the picture of the video, didn't realize the lens protector didn't open all the way. I'll get a better video of it running soon.
Well I took the truck for a test drive this evening. Can't say there is a huge difference between the new cam and the old, but there is a pretty dang big torque increase on the low end. Before the 1000-1500 RPM range was pretty guttless, now by 1300 RPM there's lots of torque and it moves itself, even with 500 pounds of beauty bark in the back around pretty dang good. I'm happy with it, it runs way smoother taking off from a stop now. Doesn't sound like it's trying to work to take off, I noticed the transmission shifts slightly better with this cam. The shift points are better it seems.
When you floorboard it, it pulls HARD! and I don't hear that slight early signs of pinging at full throttle like I used to anymore, either.
That is good to hear man. I just installed my new cam this past weekend as well. Thought about going with a similar cam as you have, but I went with one that had slightly more lift.
Did you end up changing out your timing chain?
Its nice getting to enjoy the fruits of your labors.
Yeah, I used the Cloyes Original True Roller timing chain. Which cam did you wind up with?
I went with a Comp Extreme 4x4 254H-11, it has around .5 lift and I think 270 duration. You can slightly hear it, I have an extremely crappy exhaust though right now, so when I redo it, I think you will be able to hear it alot better. I bought the whole kit too, so it had everything I needed including timing chain. I shaved my heads .020" as well, it is like driving a different truck now, i even actually squealed the big ole 33x12.50 mud tires on accident yesterday, the throttle response and acceleration are awesome now.
Nice! I took my truck out to run some errands tonight. Man, does it run way better than before. It runs smoother, it's way more torquey, and for some reason now hot restarts are even easier than it was before lol.
Ha, sounds like the perfect candidate for the meet here in August! Dunno where it's at or when we are doing it but I just started the thread Come on, you haven't even been to one! You could bring your old man and the truck.
I know the old man wouldn't wanna go lol. What's up man? haven't heard from you in a while haha.
I've been around, just not posting here . See unlike you fancy guys, I don't know diddly about timing stuff. So I just sit in the corner reading.
I applied/volunteered for WAFTE chapter leader since the only part of the job I don't do is accepting members. I greet em, start threads, help pin them on the map etc.
Otherwise, I've been poking around the truck and I think I figured out where my brake fluid leak is coming from. The proportioning valve on my frame seems like it leaks a little, plus on one part of the steel line leading to the rear it was wet. As for my VW, not much has happened. I entered that and my bronco in the car show Ed Britz did at Coastal. Didn't win but we raised about $3000 for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation just from show entries and donations. 93 people showed up and registered, for the first show on his own Ed was more than pleased.

I thought Algona days was pathetic last year, you should have seen it this year! I didn't know the Costal car show was the same day, I would have gone lol. I noticed Auburn had their car show and stuff the same day, too.
Well I took the truck to the doctors office and back this morning. Wow this thing runs great! it has much more torque for getting up the hills and stuff, and even with the truck half way loaded, it didn't use hardly any gas. I drove it about 20 or so miles too.
I heard they had some sort of cruise in thing where instead of a "car show", people just drive their cars in and show them off without any trophies or anything... The Coastal one was great, I didn't even see the Auburn show.
I had to run to Napa that day and saw all the commotion down there. Looks like it was a fairly decent show, I wanted to go to the Costal one lol. Damn.
