Mine fires right up on about the first half a crank, just doesn't like to run right(very choppy) with any choke on, even in sub zero temps. Never had on not like a little choke before.

Mine always fires up the first crank, but sometimes takes a bit longer than others, particularly if it's been sitting. Sometimes it takes 10 seconds of cranking, others a half a second before it goes vrrrrooommm.

I can't see why having little to no choke would be an issue if you aren't having problems getting it to start.

@FordFETruck

Looks like that came has some decent RPM range and seems to have a decent amount of lift, duration seems to be alright as well. Lobe separation seems to be a bit on the choppy idle side but not bad. My stock cam had short duration and lift was in the high .300's but I can't remember much else. The RV cam I have I have no idea what the specs are but it dies right around 4800.

I ran that came through my dyno simulator and it brought the peak torque down about 50 lb-ft but made it more usable across the RPM range. Horsepower peaked at 5,000rpm even, torque peaked at 4,000.

This engine runs so smooth you almost can't feel it run. Same with the old cam, it appeared to be a High energy 252H comp cam.

Damn! Mine shakes the truck like a **** lol. Thing vibrates like crazy (within reason obviously, for a V8). You should see my front fender, the fender is so flimsy from rust it shakes furiously.

My cam was put in when aftermarket was in it's early stages so it's probably something old school. Every old school "trick" you can think of was done. It was actually a 302 cam, so it runs a 302 firing order actually.

Mine is so smooth and quiet that if you're in traffic at idle and you have the windows up and the radio on about 30% you can't tell it's running really unless you're looking at the gauges lol.

Thats good, my idle is a little choppy, so you can feel it when it lopes, but it is a good thing, kinda like sitting on a harley.

@FordFETruck (What's your name btw?)

Where's the fun in that? haha. If I have a big truck with a V8, I want the world to know it lol. The cab does reduce the engine volume quiet a lot though, I have noticed that. We used to run straight pipes/open headers for years until New York decided they wouldn't pass it for inspection until we put cats on it "just because the 6 cylinder had one". What BS. It's on it's 3rd engine with absolutely no emissions junk on it period, and no computer, except those cats they wanted on it. The damn thing is exempt because it's older than 1996!!!!

As you can see in the one video I posted in another thread, I was a good 25-30 yards away and you could very clearly hear it when my dad revved the snot out of it (as he always does when starting it). That was with Walker mufflers.

My idle as you can see in that video on the last page is fairly smooth but makes a very deep tone. Directly behind it, it sounds kinda tinny from the cheap mufflers (to shut up the cops) but from the side it sounds very deep, like a big block. I love it. I always get asked what's in it. People go bugged eyed when I tell them it's engine #3. Even more so when I tell them it's from the '70s lol

Got it. I thought I saw it/new it lol.

Damn you need an '86 tailgate. I hate those other ones. Yuck. Much rather see them with the big 'ol F O R D across the back lol. Everything looks pretty good though, sounds kinda similar to mine. You should record a video of you taking it for a drive, and really, really getting on it to see performance and the sound of the motor. That does run really quiet. I have to practically shout over mine.

I've made a short walkaround of mine too. Most of the light details I covered, but there is a lot I left out/forgot.

The tailgate that's on it is the correct tailgate, if I take the trim piece off. But then there's holes for the screws. I'm either going to find a different tailgate that doesn't have the Lariat trim piece on it or get a welder and tack weld the holes up sometime and paint the tailgate. Works great, ugly as hell though. It used to be red and black lol.

I wonder how much junk yards charge for tailgates? there's plenty of base model trucks around here to go around. Shouldn't be hard to find one.

Probably like $50-$75. Make sure the handle works though. I have to open mine with pliers and it been replaced before.

As far as sound, mine has a nice deep sound from outside or with the windows open (you should hear it climbing the up slopes on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel). Inside with the windows closed and the radio at about 22%, it is virtually silent (the extra insulation under the carpet helped) the 1996 door panels have a pretty thick pad behind them so I'm sure that helps.

When we were moving my cousin in Easton MD over Labor Day weekend, my brother, who has an '07 Tundra he put duals on right after he bought it, asked me "What's wrong with the exhaust on your truck, it sounds kind of loud?", I informed him that that was what a big block with the original 1986 exhaust sounds like.
