Time to put the new Comp Cams XE250H and the new Comp Magnum roller tip rockers on. More pictures tomorrow, took me about 90 minutes to get this far, and 20 of that was just me messing around wondering how I'm going to plug the transmission cooler lines.
Well, got the old cam out, got the valve springs, umbrella seals and new valve locks installed. Looks like the old cam is a Comp cam of some sort. I took a ruler with a level on it and the new cam (this is just a rough guess, accurate measurements later) has probably 50-60 thousandths or more lift over the old cam.
I noticed from the old cam to the new, the stamping marks, locations and numbers are all in the same spot from the old to the new. For whatever reason on the back there was also this purple stuff on the new and old cam, same spot. The numbers however, are different from old to new.
I was 3/4 of the way pissed the hell off when I saw the cam bearings, they're smooth though and I don't have any oil pressure problems, in fact I have very good oil pressure. Also the old cam spun very nicely in the bearings, it seems the farther in the engine the less and less wear the bearings have. Either way, I was pissed but they should be just fine.
Yep, lol. I worked on it about 6 hours today pretty much non stop. at 120-130 PSI with the piston up to pretty much TDC, the air just forces the piston back down. I guess my rings have a good seal to them. I also saw the piston skirts, they looked like brand new. No scratches from what I could see and still had the machine marks.
I got the new cam in, new lifters and new roller tip rockers on tonight. I also painted the front of the engine, timing cover and thermostat housing. The thermostat housing and the timing cover turned out perfect. Engine block looks really nice too. I will be ordering a different timing chain since the last one had like 2 degrees of slack in it from when it was new. Still has that, but while it's apart I'm just going to buy a better one and be done with it. Oh, looks like the old cam was a Comp Cams high energy series 252H
Can't wait to hear the before/after report on how the cam feels. Seems like a small change from the HE252 to the XE250, but sometimes those small changes make all the difference.
.433 intake .433 exhaust on the 252H vs .461 intake .474 exhaust, the open and close times are slightly different. Overlap between the two cams was 1 degree difference.
I got the valve train adjusted, put the carb on and got all of that stuff hooked up. Only thing holding me up is the new timing set which should be here pretty soon.
