Well the truck is running! no leaks, started right up. It was hot out and I only had water in the cooling system so it kept getting kinda hot, I got 13 minutes in to the break in though and so far so good. I'll finish the break in tomorrow. I do need to readjust my rocker arms though, they sound a little chattery at 2000 RPM. But so far no problems.
New timing set is a Cloyes True roller timing chain.
New chain is on the top, notice the pin/roller size difference. The old one was just a standard double roller, and stretched quite a lot since I put it on. POS chain that was, the new one is much tighter. Although the new one does have about .5-1 degree of slack. I'm not complaining since the first chain I put on had like 2-3 degrees of slack new! Besides, I had a hell of a time getting the new timing set on.
I'm not sure, according to Cloyes the original timing set I bought was to meet factory specs and when the engine would warm up the gears would expand and take up the slack. That actually did happen a little bit, but never took all the slack out when it was warm. I think that's mostly BS anyways.
Either that or my engine's been align bored, but with the new chain being so tight I don't think so.
I had about 600 or so miles on the Cloyes C-3057K double roller chain that's $26
The factory roller chain in my 1990 Lincoln Town Car had way over 100K on it and was still pretty tight. The 460 EFI engine I tore down still had a snug factory roller chain on it. Maybe your Cloyes, wasn't a Cloyes, but a Chinese knock off.
Maybe, but I know anything Cloyes is made by them. I think it was just a crappy chain. The cheap timing set cam gear even had a Ford part number on it. E3AE-blah blah blah.
The new timing set had the same gear, but you could tell the timing chain was much beefier and stronger feeling. This new set came with a 3 key way crank sprocket which I installed straight up.
600 miles and it's slack?
There's definitely something wrong.
I have the 9-1122 in my 460 truck.
It was about $45 IIRC.
It's been 5 years and seems fine, though I haven't actually looked at it.
Jim, does the street true roller have rollers in the chain, or is it just a standard double roller? I have the original true roller. I'm fairly embarrassed at the price of $92 but honestly. I didn't pay for it. (wasn't stolen, either)
I got the camshaft break in finished tonight. Sounds way better as far as exhaust note is concerned. Sounds like I only have a couple rockers that chatter slightly when the engine is hot. No problem, I'll fix that this weekend. I noticed at about 500 RPM idle it had 16" of steady vacuum. As I increased the engine speed slowly and held it, it went up to about 18 or so. My timing is at 12* BTDC (doesn't like anymore than that, as far as restarts are concerned) I'll get it figured out though. The vacuum line I had on the gauge wasn't the tightest fit though, and it was super long.
But, I did an accidental peel out in the driveway by just cracking the throttle plates open! haha. Wasn't able to do that before.
Matt,
Is your DSII timing retard functioning?
The module should pull out 3* of ignition advance while the starter is engaged.
Hot starts should not be a problem at 9.

My module says "MADE IN CHINA" on it, but I cranked it for a while once and had my dad look at it, and it does seem to function 2-3 degrees retard.
I got the rockers re adjusted tonight, they are all quiet now except for one that still makes slight noise, I'll fix that in the morning and double check all of them to make sure none are too tight. They shouldn't be, they're all at 3/4 of a turn now. Tomorrow I also have to take my bottom alternator bracket off and straighten that out. Then I'll finally test drive it and come back and change the oil filter.
Oh, now I get 17" of vacuum at about 750 RPM idle, if I go to off idle it goes up to 19-20" of vacuum, the engine doesn't idle quite as smooth as it used to. But inside the cab it feels the same and when it goes in to gear it gets really smooth. Very responsive now, much more than before.
Oh, just as a reminder to everybody. Take this seriously, LOOK FOR TOOLS BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE! I forgot the breaker bar down there and when I went to start it I heard a clunk then it started normally. I got out to look to see how much oil my rockers are getting ( they get a lot ) and found the breaker bar, socket and harmonic balancer bolt on the ground. Scared the **** out of me needless to say.
