Turns out my E4OD is going a little wonky as well. 210,000 miles. (90 F350 chassis cab dually, 4.30, 4x4, 460). Once it warms up it "slips" between 3rd and 4th gears with no effort. 1-3 are great. Is this sound more like the u-joint issue mentioned before? Solenoid? My friends are telling me I need new bands. Just not liking 3 completely different ideas to chase . .. . Thank you for your thoughts. key4uni, I PM'd you for a copy of the zip as well.
So, I took my truck to a trany shop. They say i have a code 62, which they say is a generic slip code. Is there anything external to the trany which might generate this code??
chrisek, I sent you the zip, finally...
and about the trouble you are having, sounds like rebuild time...if it slips after warmed up, it generally would be a seal issue, or some other drop in line pressure...have you hooked up a pressure gauge yet? I did on mine, and it was **** poor...at idle first fire up, was at about 30 psi, and went down to zero with in 2 minutes...dead give away of pump problem, one, and two other internal seals....and sure enough, JUST got the trans apart, and what a mess! Burned up frictions, a bunch of bad seals, and a plethera of other issues. The seals were found when doing a clutch lock in with air after removing the valve body, accumulator and solenoid pack....HISSSSSSSSSS, and no "clunk" like I should have heard with the engagement, out of any of my tests...oh yeah, and almost all of the thrust washers are totally worn...all the bronze is worn off, and a few had no oil passages left on them...looks like an upgrade to 6 pinnion front and od are in the mix, plus the upgrade to bearing on the center support...
Eric, there could be a number of issues with the code 62...as for an external issue, maybe...one being a faulty position switch, wiring, bad ground, you name it, it could be anything...if your trans is slipping, first thing I would definetly do is do a pressure test...two, check for the ground wire, I don';t know what year yours is, but there should be a grounding cable on one of the top bell housing bolts going to the frame. A missing ground wire or poor ground will reak havoc on an E4OD... Also, if it is like mine, the wiring harness and connectors need to be checked... if ANYTHING is not right, these E4OD's will run irradically. One thing on these vehicles, and every other...test, test and TEST again...one great tool that I have always relyed on is a multimeter. You can always find what the resistance values or the voltage values SHOULD be, and take it from there.
Wow, just opened up the forward drum and clutch, and it is a complete mess...welded on to the ring gear are all the clutches, the spring is snapped in three places, the needle bearing is toast...gosh, what a nightmare! More new parts...
I think I need to have my transmission rebuilt. Seems to slip in the 2nd to 3rd shift if not under heavy acceleration. I don't drive the van that much any more, but do use it for long family vacations. '97 5.4 Triton, 12 passenger clubwagon. Could I get a copy of the zip file?
