Before I get involved in a complete rebuild I want to do a complete fluid change and the filter. After draining the torque converter and dropping the pan and changing the filter how do I flush the cooling system. I read somewhere to refill everything and pull the return line off the trans and let the new fluid push the old fluid through. Is this correct?, and which line on the E4OD is the return?
Well to give you a update. Did all this but still have problems. Time to have the trans gone through.
I have a bronco with same problem, shifts very hard its a 94 4x4 I have a 90 f 150 with a 3 speed 2wd. the bronco has a 302 the truck 300 -6. Will everything out of truck go in bronco. someone said the tail end unbolts off the 5 speed and the transfer case will bolt right on to the broncos,, Can anyone help? i would love the 5 speed in the bronco
I would like to get a copy of the zip file. My problem is when you get up to speed you have to let off on the gas to get it to shift into overdrive. if anyone has any suggestions please let me know

Hi jsteven22,
I had a problem similar to yours. My E4OD also wouldn't shift from 3 to 4 and only letting off the fuel briefly would shift it. The problem was fixed when I replaced both u-joints on the drive shaft. Don't know if this will fix your problem but it's a relatively cheap repair.
I will get the zip file off to you after posting this.

The E4OD is a different beast compared to the GM models, progressively harder but still doable.
I have this problem with installing a part that has gouging along its raceway and the bearing that is inserted into it is loaded with material looks like plastic! I have been unable to determine if this is okay to re-use in its condition and also I can not find a replacement anywhere! Common sense says don't reuse it...
I found this problem on the input shell.
I don't know if this bad enough to junk this part and purchase a new or not! Everyone else says to pay someone to rebuild it. I don't have that much $ to pay for someone to rebuild it. I do have experience in rebuilding automatics limited to GM models but the FMC models are interesting.
Hi Chad,
I'm not up completely on the what the parts in the E4OD look like and the images you uploaded are a bit small. If you could identify where the bearing is located, and what the other parts are, perhaps I can look up if there is an upgrade for that area of the trans. It sounds to me that if you can't find a 1 to 1 replacement, this area has been upgraded in some way. If you haven't already got them, I would definitely suggest your getting both the ASTG Rebuild Manual and the ASTG Update Manual specifically for the E4OD. I got both off of Ebay in new condition. They'd probably help give you insight on what's going on, upgrades, and replacement procedures.

Sry Trans is from a 1990 F250 4x4, 460cid Gas engine.
My ATSG manual calls this: Reverse hub & low/reverse one way clutch assembly. Okay I noticed something, in the manual but it is not apparent that this is in place on the part. There is supposed to be a thrust washer PN 7E194 and a snap ring that holds this clutch roller in place, it wasn't there when I took it apart.
Seems odd, maybe there was revision on this from the time they started making it to 1990. I have an 1998 F150 with the same tranny in it I wonder what that part looks like?
The bearing is not trashed as its easily taken apart and cleaned it is made of plastic and has springs holding the rollers in the race.
One thing that I noticed when I opened the case was the intermediate return spring was flopping around as the notorious spring clip failed!
I shrunk the pics to thumbnail I didn't want to eat up bandwidth with the larger versions. Should be able to click on them to enlarge 'em.
