It is still under warranty, but the company that did the rebuild is no longer in business. I had changed the fluid because I could hear the fluid boiling. This was because the torque converter failed to go into lockdown thanks to a corroded solenoid pigtail. I'm thinking because of the extreme heat that the TOT is now out. I've had back surgery twice now so getting under the truck to test the TOT with an VOM is not the easiest thing in the world to do. I'm hoping that I can replace the fluid, filter, and solenoid pack and be back to operating normally again. I'm looking for any suggestions anyone might have.
I am no tranny expert ... so no clue on what the issue could be. I thought I had a solenoid pack issue and replaced it but it turned out to be water in the fluid that turned to ice and prevented shifting. I found out the paper gasket for the solenoid is discontinued and was only available from one dealer I checked... there must be a substitute or something out there. The gasket covers the whole valve body which means you are supposed to take the whole deal apart (pita) so what I did was use the solenoid pack as a template and cut out the gasket from the larger one and just replaced the pack and worked out fine.
I'm thinking with the way that it is acting that shift solenoid 2 must not be opening all the way. this would cause the weak 2nd gear and neutral condition in 3rd. speed never gets up high enough for od to kick in. I'm going to attempt to clean the solenoid connection again since it helped last time around.
I finally signed up, I've been reading on here for a while. I have a 92 F150 4x4 that was low on fluid got stuck. (I didn't know about low fluid) It now slips bad and fluid smells. I have a 2wd transmission, but have heard I need to tear it all down to switch the output shaft. Can I get a copy of the zip file? thanks iwia987 at yahoo.com
wow, this thread is long..very interesting... going to go forward and rebuild my 91 F250 E4OD, after fighting with every dealership, trans builder and junk yard/recycler, have figured out my BEST alternative is to just hunker down and do it myself. All info I get is SO different depending on who you talk to, so yank first, find out what I have, what I need, and go from there.
If I may, could I also get a copy of the much requested zip file, please? Many thanks!

Thank you Pickncrew, really appreciate it!
I hope I am not getting myself into a pickle with this E4OD, this puppy is out of a 91 Ford F250, a plow truck, beat to death, never ran except to plow. The last time it ran, the guy using it got it stuck on a huge snow bank, slammed it back and forth from forward to reverse, and three years later I bought it. Flushed the unit twice, thinking gunk in the tranny, which was so thick, the filter popped out with the pan. Trans worked OFF the ground, all gears, but on the ground won't move. Ahh good ol truck stop employees, and an owner that didn't keep it maintenanced...got to love it! Well I bought it for 300 dollars, it does have the 10.25 rear end tow upgrade, 4:10 front and rear. Any way, will update as I go...what do you think, new thread maybe? I plan to include pics, because I have not seen any here, or anywhere, figured it would be interesting. Anyone interested in a play by play on this let me know, I am game!
I was in the same boat in '04 - purchased F350 from Tree Service - only used lately to plow - besides ball joints - tranny was shuttering - I replaced with an HD Tow from local tranny specialist - Will need a rebuild soon - last oil change the oil was brown and smelled burnt - starting to amass parts for a future rebuild - so I am on board - dont see me doing this till fall next
