Rebuilding E4OD
If you had 3-4 shift before you fixed the light, perhaps you've created a closed circuit while fixing the wire, keeping the trans. in 3rd. It might be best, for diagnostics, to undo the repair and see if you get 3-4 back again, then try a different repair method.

My fix by the way was just an attempt to fix the problem. I just bought this (95 PSD 1 ton) van. It didn't go into 4th when I purchased the vehicle. I noticed there was no light on the shifter. So I dug in. Sure enough one of the wires was internally broken (measured an Open Circuit). So I fixed that. Now the OD light works. I can press the OD off button and the light will come on. But the OD never actually comes on no matter what. The coast clutch engages if I have the OD in OD OFF position and in 3rd gear. The coast clutch DOES NOT engage if I have the OD in OD ON position. The engine's RPMs drop to idle if I let off the pedal when OD is on.
4th gear Overdrive doesn't come on regardless of either state.
What I'd do is get the scan tool and find out what the computer sees. Once you find that out, you can un-hook the battery(s) for a half hour and reset the computer. It might clear up the problem (big might). Even if the computer doesn't show codes, I'd check the sensors to see if they are all okay. I'd also check the solenoid block connector to make sure it had not degraded, the insulation on the wires leading from it hadn't melted/burned off and were shorting, and that the interior of the connector socket on the trans. was clean of dirt, and there was no water pooled in it.
When I first got my van, I had a problem of no 3-4 shift unless I let off the fuel briefly and re-applied.Turned out replacing the u-joints on the drive shaft cleared the problem up.
Internal Diagnostics (from E4OD rebuild manual):
1. Check Fluid Level
2. Check Line Pressure - High or Low line pressure
3. Check Solenoid Operation - Solenoid 2 suspect
4. Check Valve Body bolts - too tight, too loose
5. Inspect Valve Body - dirty, or sticking valves
6. Inspect 3-4 Shift Valve - valve stuck, nicked, damaged. spring missing, tangled
7. Inspect Overdrive Accumulator Regulator Valve - valve stuck, nicked, damaged. spring missing, tangled.
8. Inspect Overdrive Clutch - clutch plates burnt or worn. overdrive clutch cylinder damaged, feedbolt loose or missing, sealant leaking. cylinder ball check assembly stuck or missing.

I will buy a Wal-Mart code reader this week.
The plug on the pass side of the transmission is filled with ATF (well it was at least when I last unplugged it). So I'm assuming there's a bad seal there.
I'd like to get a dummy harness to plug in there to take ohm readings on the solenoids and possibly manually shift the trans by grounding each solenoid. Where can I get a wiring harness that will fit in my 95 E4OD's plug?

While driving, it basically pops out of gear, almost like someone shifted it into neutral momentarily, then back into gear. When it goes back into gear, it will slam pretty hard if you have your foot on the gas much at all. It will do this 2 or 3 times in a 5 minute period then be fine for a couple of weeks. Then it does it again. We were able to reduce the occurance by overfilling the transmission fluid, but that is not an ideal long term fix. Anybody else have this problem?

mine tends to wind up prety high before it shifts into 2nd sometimes i have to back off on the throttle to get it to shift. if it needs to be rebuilt, I've never rebuilt a trans before so I was thinking about buying a junkyard trans identical to mine and building that.

I was going to ask you as well for the files, but after a little searching found it on another server. If it's alright by you I posted "the file" on my server for all since it seems that's who it's intended for anyhow

Here's the link. It can stay there forever unless you wish otherwise and I'll gladly take it down for you.

Hope that doesn't upset anyone, not trying to step on any toes here
