..shoved it on down into Overdrive...
I do not believe the songwriter knew how a BW OD worked on these old vehicles. Yeah, you shoved the T shaped **** in to engage OD but If you were after performance, you sure did not use OD.
Oh well, it was a neat song
A lot of the 50s hot rods with overdrive used really low axle ratios for faster acceleration, frequently 4.44 or 4.55 ratios. With a ratio that low you can get top speed in overdrive. My 53, probably not, but I've never tried.

I'll have to look into getting my ride a little safer before the next big trip. For starters, one of my wheels locks up with even moderate brake pressure--not a good thing for cruising at interstate speeds.

There is a huge difference in how early 50s Ford cars and trucks drive. Compared to your panel my sedan is a much lower car with independent front suspension, big radial tires, and is geared for overdrive with a 4.10 rear axle matched to the 0.7 to 1 OD, results in final drive of 2.87. Gearing is one of the changes that transforms your driving experience. There is a reason that 3.5~ish ratios are really popular in otherwise stock F-1s. I wouldn't be surprised if your panel has the 4.27 ratio axle in it, USCG would want low speed grunt.
By all means, get your steering and brakes up to original spec and drive with confidence!
I posted a picture of the Clinton County courthouse in another thread. We took our annual Christmas card picture with my wife and son and my 54 at dusk last night. On the way home crossing the bridge over the Susquehanna I had to take a picture of the courthouse.
And today, since our Guv is shutting down all restaurants in PA at midnight due to COVID I went to my favorite diner for breakfast. Then I had to run some errands and saw some beautiful Central PA sites. Enjoy.
for those guys that were at TS, this is very close to Grant Miller's sprawling estate and his "garage".
An Amish farm
an old mill
Another Amish farm. It must be wash day.
And then I saw this Christmas atrocity!
I don't want to sound like a humbug, but it looks like an explosion at a Christmas supply warehouse! Even Big Foot is in the spirit!
Nice pictures Abe. Thanks for sharing. I do want to know though.......are those rubber marks on the pavement from you the last time you went through there?
The past two days were hard rain and warm strong winds and it melted the 17" of snow we got last week. Today the roads were free of salt and dry, so I took the F3 out for a drive.
Mostly to charge the battery and run some fresh fuel through the carb...but it was fun driving it during 'winter in Maine'. One week ago there were 3 foot tall snowbanks and everything was covered in snow.

Tom, that must be a first in the recorded annals of weather.... North Central PA covered in snow and Maine has no snow on Dec 26.
In North Central WI, we only have about an inch of snow. Hardly enough to really count as a "white" Christmas, but still enough to keep my truck off the roads. Ski and snowmobile trails won't be opening any time soon--very disappointing. The only consolation is there is 7 inches of ice on the lake for broom hockey and skating. Tom, we'll have to wait and see how things turn out in March. Two years ago winter came in slow, but we ended up with huge snow drifts for Easter.
Then on Thurs of this week it rained hard all day long, then Friday (Christmas Day) it got cold. I still have snow covering my backyard and of course the mountains around us are covered.
This time of the year I'm thankful I live in Arizona. Other times, not so much so. Hope you guys don't get too much more snow and have a mild winter. Keep the pictures coming so I can stay motivated!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year1
Thanks, Ken.
