A little more progress ... Put the second coat of sanding sealer on the wood bows. The bows and drivers door panel will be painted tomorrow. Also trying to get the wiring finished. I still am looking for a bezel for my speedo. I will be putting in some after market gauges for temp and oil pressure.
Keith,
There is no reason why you can't have reliable original gauges. The temperature gauge system has one sender, and one switch. The sender is in one head, and gives you a reading. It's tied to a switch in the other head, that will open if that head gets hot, pinning the gauge on the H. Call me if you need help.
Chuck
Thanks Chuck. If anyone was going to know it would be you! Still not sure what to do. My temp gauge is missing its needle so I will need a new one, a voltage reducer, temp sensor and switch and I still won't be able to mointor the temp accurately. I will give you a call about what I need.
Yesterday Gerald went out and sprayed the bows and driver's door panel. The new paint I bought came out too glossy so they will have to be re-sprayed. What do you guys think of the bows in semi-gloss black? I think they won't be so noticeable if they were matte black. I had a feeling the paint was going to be wrong.
IMHO period correct would be gloss black, it's unlikely that they would have painted them flat or even semigloss in 1948. The finish may have lost some of it's gloss in use do to firemen's obsession with cleaning their equipment, but flat would have never been used, wouldn't have held up.
Axracer - you're probably right. I will ask the original driver Ron to know for sure.
I emailed some people who bought my Fire Patrol book asking them if they had an interest in my book on the truck. So far I have around 40 who said to reserve one for them. Shortly, I am going to do the same on this thread and may be start another about the book. The other day a friend asked me about the title. He thought "My Grandfather's Fire Truck" sounds like a children's book .... even my wife agreed. I am not so sure. I have been thinking about other titles. Anyone have a suggestion??
"My Grandfather's Fire Truck"
The greatest truck story ever told!!
or
"My Grandfather's Fire Truck"
"The story of Fire Patrol #5"
or
?????????????
Back to the restoration. I called the upholstery shop today to see if they had the vinyl samples in. He said he had two so I will be checking them out tomorrow morning.

Or maybe
"Fire Patrol #5"
The story of my Grandfather's Fire Truck
What is wrong with it sounding like a kids book. As a young teen I would have loved to read it. Along with Moby Dick, Tom Sawyer and many others. It's not like it's the "Little Train that Could".
My wife is the computer expert but I tried to come up with a tentative cover.
I think I like the red the best or maybe the black LOL. I will have the red picture bordered in black and of course the text in black too. I just don't know how to do it
Or maybe the top half black and the bottom red just like its painted. Friends of mine who wrote 4 CFD books did it in that color scheme.
I kind of agree but I will have to see it bordered in black and with the text black, it won't seem to wash out the truck. Black is still good. What do you think of the split color scheme??
