I am going to order the letters and striping. The fender wheel well areas are going to be a pain to stripe. You cant bend the tape, it has to be cut in pieces.

Rich, They are not charging for the re-chrome jobs. It just sucks I've been waiting 7 weeks and now this. I know it will be a few weeks more. And no there are other chrome shops ... this one was highly recommended to me.
After all the work you've done, you're going to use vinyl to finish it? I'm sure if you looked you could find a hand pinstriper in your area that could do the job right, and it's not terribly expensive, They can pull a lot of lines in an hour. Same with the leafing, it's not difficult or expensive to do (I'd be willing to bet the difference between doing by hand and cutting vinyl isn't very much at all, vinyl requires a lot of time to do right). I cut vinyl and lay striping tape, and can say with certainty that high quality vinyl striping tape can turn any bend or corner you need it to without cutting in the hands of someone experienced with it. I can turn 1/4" into 3" circles. First please don't use vinyl, but if you must, don't cut it to make curves, a couple days in the sun and it will look like some 16 year old kid did it. If you are not confident you can do it yourself, hire someone who can, you'll be glad you did.

Originally they used gold leafing on the truck. Have you checked the price of gold lately?? The quote I got 3 years ago was $1800 and with how much the price of gold has skyrocketed, I can only imagine how much it would cost today. Believe me I really don’t want to use vinyl but I really might not have a choice. <O</O

Keith? I am willing to put a $100 dollars up towards having the gold leaf and striping done right and by hand. Anyone else want to chip in? We can do this and be more a part of this build than just our praise and advice in words. And maybe even get an honorable mention in his new book.

Seriously Guy's, Donations anyone?

Let's PM him I guess as I don't think he would want his address posted in an open forum. But idk as I don't understand much about this internet other than it's cool and works for the most part. I just don't want to feed the spam and scam scene.

Edit: Okay my PM sent.

Guys thanks so much for the offer but I can't take anyone's money except for a book!!! I am going to check again on prices to do it right but I think it is going to be thousands of dollars. Rich, by the way most people who are regular commenters on my build are already mentioned in the book!!

I know Keith. I think I was just trying to make it look sweeter to them that may not know. And I have seen dreams come true here when someone was in need first hand. So Just PM me your address and charge me a C note for the books if ya want. Most of the folks wouldn't let me pay them back, And I forgot some others. So this is good for me as well as you.

Most gold leafing is done with imitation leaf, but even real gold leaf isn't outrageous in price, 25 sheets ~3x3" is 50.00. Imitation leaf is 100 sheets ~ 5.5x5.5" for 17.00. Imitation gold leaf needs to be clear coated after application. I'd shop around, try older sign shops and sign painters. Ask fire depts for references. Gold pinstriping isn't done with leaf, but with gold paint.

Keith,

Ironic you mentioned Gold leaf. I had a guy at the shop the other day. wait for it, who was a painter for fire trucks in a fire museum. He was also a sign painter and specialized in a lot of the gold leaf for the trucks. We were not talking price, but his first question was " what are your designs for the doors" As time gets closer, I will revisit the subject with him. I am still a long way off

Keith,

Try contacting the Hall of Flame museum in Phoenix, AZ, (602) 275-3473. Tell them what you're doing and they may be able to help you out with any advice on the gold leafing. Maybe they can help you buy it cheaper or have info on anyone in your area that can get this task done.

Thanks Guys!! I will look into the leafing this week. Jim thanks for the link.

<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:OfficeDocumentSettings> <o:AllowPNG/> </o:OfficeDocumentSettings> </xml><![endif]--> Gerald fitted the sheet metal to the wood yesterday. He also got the metal prepped. This morning we got the middle bins fitted in the bed, nailed the compartment door metal to the wood and worked on attaching the door handles and latches. It’s going to look good when painted and installed.
