Block sanding stinks..... Gerald said I would get an education when we began ... well its a subject manner I'm not crazy about. We sanded all day and got most of the first round done. we have some areas to fix and then the trim goes back on. Then more primer and resand the body with 320 grit paper. Here are some pics.
Thanks guys!! Bobby I definately took some Motrin last night!
I called the painter yesterday and asked if he could look at the truck one more time before it goes to his shop. He will coming by on Friday. One of the questions I have to ask is if we should paint the interior before he paints the exterior. I think it will be easier for us to do the interior first.
A mobile welder is coming out Thursday to extend the front of the frame to make extra space to put diamond plate behind the front bumper.
Some more pics of the 49. I would like to see this restored one day too but the museum doesn't have the $$$. Its nice to have this around to use as a reference although it was by a different builder.
Was looking thru the pics I took 2 years ago and found this. If my rail was bent like this I would of left it alone. This truck was built by General Body of Chicago the same company that built the Oscar Meyer Weinermobile.
Eventually, that truck will be sold and someone will likely hot rod it.
You should leave your info with the museum in case they ever decide to sell it. You may get it cheap. It's history that should not be wasted.
Man this forum is packed with enablers.
Keith, all you have to do is get it and sneak it in. Then when she sees it and asks you just say : "This old thing, I've had it for ages. You must have just forgotten about it."
Hey if it doesn't work, you have plenty of room to live in your fire truck.
I know all the guys at the museum real well. Its only Patrol rig rig left in their collection of fire apparatus so I don't think they will be parting with it soon. What they are hoping is that one day I will get tired of my rig and donate it back to them. Who knows that may happen eventually if my sons, when they are adults, have no interest in it.
I showed the picture of the 49 to Gerald a few months ago and told him thats our next project!! He said send it down.
Maybe when I retire in 7 years it will give me something to do!!
With the impeccable job you're doing on your truck, I would be willing to donate parts or money when you're ready to get the 49 restored.
Since the museum is likely a non-profit, they can easily petition for donations. I'm sure that there's more than a handful of us on FTE that will donate to the cause.
