Well it's done...I got 'em wired up. I originally was going to just T off and run both the gauge lights and the ashtray light, but I ended up just disconnecting the ashtray light and connecting its power wire to the wire leading to the gauge lights. It all works great.
I dunno why, but the voltmeter is a lot more sensitive now that I have it on ignition hot....if I turn the headlights on, the needle drops immediately to reflect the load, and the needle ever so slightly wiggles reflecting the not-quite-steady voltage output. It's a new alternator and voltage regulator, so it's not that causing it. But I ain't complaining.
bighonkin, post it up, and then also put a link of it into the tech suggestion thread.
and Grant, with laptop screens you're kinda screwed. if it's just the cover, aka the back, you're fine. but 99.999% it's not.
depending on the age, you can either send it in and have it replaced by the manufacturer, which can be very costly.
you can also start browsing craigslist, ebay, and any other site that works like those, to see if you can find a laptop just like yours to replace the screen with.
A lot of people on craigslist will sell their laptops if there is a motherboard failure, small things like that are costly to repair also.
As for the replacing part, it's very simple.
take out screws, remove plastic covers, remove wires, remove old screen, put new one in, attach wires, put plastic covers back on, screw it back together. When you go to boot it, you should be all set then
depending on your finances, you could also go and buy a new one. laptops are so inexpensive now a days, it's ridiculous.
don't play around with wires, when the ignition is on.
that is all
Oh I made good and sure the key was off before I did anything. Considering that I was working with a positive wire right next to a ground. It's pretty nice to not have to turn the key, flip two switches, and then if it's night time, turn on the headlights and flip another switch. Now I just turn the keys and if it's night, pull the headlight switch out.
Gonna call Carquest and ask about the carb kit today.

Ouch. I almost touched a wrench to ground when I was working on a battery clamp a few years ago. It was the positive one, and I had the battery turned around where positive was closer to the fender. Oooh boy did God have His hand over me, I would fried myself with that one.
Did I ever mention how I called a guy out at Sears for saying their Diehard battery is better than an Optima?
