i run a little business, makes a lot of money, i will work on anything, except laptops. i hate those things.
i own one, and I can't stand it.
but give me a desktop and I will make it godly hell, give me 1k and I can make you a better computer than you could buy for the same price
I still have an old AMD Athlon 750MHz (the old cartridge type CPU)....I used it for probably 7 years til I got a newer Dell Optiplex 170l with a 2.4GHz Celeron. Works great, but the Athlon will still give it a run for its money.
some of those older processors are amazingly stable.
and i hat dell.
never liked them.
hated them even more when they bought Alienware.
not. cool
or was it voodoo....
eh, either way. i am a custom person, never liked name brands.
Yep. I think once I get more RAM for this Optiplex it'll be much faster. It has 256MB at the moment....DDR1 memory is so darn expensive.
I've had okay experiences with them. We have a Dell Inspiron laptop and it's worked great. Also this Optiplex is running great.
And I'm into custom stuff too. Proprietary parts make me mad. Speaking of which...
When I got this Dell Optiplex, it was semi-gutted, including the Dell CPU fan (ya know, the case fan with the shroud over it). Not having any other similar fan setups to fit it, I ziptied in a 120mm clear case fan and positioned it to blow on the CPU heatsink. Worked a charm, but still ran a little hot. So, I took a Dell fan shroud from a now-defunct Dimension 8100 and cut it up just right, then put it over the 120mm fan (wedge fit!). Now the CPU stays nice and cool, since the air is directed over it.
If I ever build myself a custom computer (as in all-new parts), I might put it in a plain looking case. That way it's a sleeper, and no one will ever guess that it has a beast of a CPU in it. :P
if it's only 6 months old, see if you can still get the parts from the manufacturer, prices really vary between them.
you could also, because it's only 6 months old, see if you can get it replaced through the manufacturer.
What brand do you have?
Acer.
well, I started on the clutch today.
Taking way longer then I thought it would.
