Aaawwww, I guess I'm busted. I wish I had a truck that knocks and smokes and is so rattly I can't hear myself think with less power than my V10 so I could feel manly...
For the record, my 7.3 is actually pretty quiet. if u cant hear yourself think over the sound of a diesel, then you might just pass out at one of those loudass gasser drag races huh? About 6 months after i got the truck, i started adding 2cycle engine oil to my fuel. Amazing difference in soumd and seems to run smoother. This is the only additive me and my brother use. They screwed the diesel community with the new Ultra low sulfer diesel. Yeah, my truck may smoke, but only when i get into the throttle really hard. I enjoy it.
Your V10 may have more get up and go power from the factory, but its a well known fact that our 7.3's will pull a house off the foundation. Plus, with me only dumping about $1k in my 7.3 (tuner, intake, exhaust), id be willing to bet your V10 with the same amount in upgrades would be the one in my rearview mirror.
Do you use the exact same extended-life coolant in both?
Just curious.
Since they use different coolants that would mean I don't use the exact same one. I use the longest lasting coolant I can find for my gasser and it lasts 150k miles. I use the longest lasting I can find for my diesel and it is 600k. The "cheap" normal life coolant for the diesel is still good for 300k miles. Before you ask your next question, no I do not have to go to some diesel "specialty store" in order to find my coolant. Unless you consider Napa or Wal Mart a specialty store.....

By $1k I'm sure you mean that in addition to the extra $4K you paid for the engine upgrade, right?
I'm pretty sure many here could do some interesting things to that V10 for $5K.
What do you think, JL? How much power do you think you could get out of your V10 for $5K?
Hell, if I could have saved the $7K when I bought mine and gone with the V10 I certainly would have! I could have bought lots o' gas with that $7K and it would have towed my "little" 10K trailer just fine!

The difference is that the 5k you put into a V10 won't stay with it in terms of resale value like the engine upgrade will. You don't get all of your engine premium back when you sell, but you do get most of it.

Without a doubt you're correct here. This is the silver lining to my MPG cloud. This is the first, and probably last, vehicle I've ever bought new that's still worth what I paid for it a year ago. All courtesy of the obscenely expensive and complex animal hiding under the hood.
But at the same time $5K would build a pretty mean V10!

I was thinking about getting a supercharger for my 5.4 a while back and the entire kit was right at about $5k. They claimed a 30% increase in hp and tq if I remember correctly. That would have put me at 338 hp and 455 tq. Those same numbers would put a v10 at around 470 hp and 590 tq, assuming their claims are correct.
They also said that I would lose about 8-10% of my low end hp and tq compared to stock(extra accessory drag while not making much boost) and that I wouldn't sacrifice any durability "as long as I didn't run it hard." That would make it a pretty mean 5.4 for a shootout, but it would hurt my normal towing(cruising/maintaining speed) and I couldn't use the extra power very much if I wanted to keep a decent level of durability.

Well, I didnt pay the extra $4k. i got a badass deal on my truck. I did my research and was patient. I ended up getting it for $11500. It blue books for over $20K.
Even so, if i did ever buy a truck brand new, which i won't, I would pay the extra $4K. With the better fuel economy, more pulling power, higher resale value(probably $4K), and the fact that our diesels do last longer than almost any gas motor, this would be woth the extra $$ to me.

I was just letting you know that is sits on the same shelf at Napa as the gasser coolant. If a diesel has a coolant that lasts 4 times as long as a v10's, then I am sure someone would say that you have to go to a specialty store that is 500 miles away or that it takes a special tool to take the radiator cap off or something like that.
I have a question too, since I don't own either of these vehicles. Do the 3v 5.4 and 3v 6.8 have the same spark plugs?

You got a really good deal.
It will get better mileage, but it won't tow better or last longer.
