Thanks for the offer Morris, unfortunately this is that 435 1ton set up that comes with the slightly larger than normal yoke. The 4x4 guys like it because of that but it's a pita changing it out as a person has to redo the drive shaft to match the yolk. It also is 31 splines instead of 28, I sold the same transmission as this one 3 years ago to a 4x4 guy and am cursing myself today as I didn't realize how much of a pita it is to use another transmission in here.
That transmission is a good and bad, good that`s hard to find. I don't know what mine is like, I presume that mine is good, I've never had it in a vehicle to test drive it and I don't even know what model it is.
Bummer about parting with your spare, I hate it when it happens to me.
Once I find a spring it should go back together without tearing it apart which would be nice. The first stage rebuild kit is 160 usd but there is a 2nd gear synchro kit for 60usd so there are options. This is one of those repairs caused by an act of silliness. There is a reason your not supposed to use the shifter for an arm rest and this is one of those reasons.
I`m looking forward to another beautiful day here, time for a cruise.
It'll save a lot of work and time if you don't have to tear completely down Perry. The clutch in my son`s 2011 Ranger 4x4 isn't releasing and so far it looks like it maybe the slave cylinder which means the transmission has to come out.
Good old concentric slave cylinder and release bearing, the small block ZF trans is the same way. May be able to thread the spring in, hope so, will know where to get one in an hour. Want to get started on this body work today or finish the trans. Weather is cherry for a while yet, summer is here. LOL
Well I have a choice, find this exact transmission by monday morning or order the parts I need out of the states and play a game of hurry up and wait. Need to order a second gear synchronizer kit as the parts can't be bought individually and I get to take out the trans and rebuild the back half of it.
Must be a really nice day out there as no one has posted until now
Another Friday leading to a nice weekend, life is good.
It`s nice to hear Manitoba is sunny too, it's supposed to be nice here for at least another week and hopefully more.
What`s a concentric slave cylinder, release bearing? I`ve never heard of this but I haven't been working on vehicles of this vintage.
do you have a good idea of where to look for that exact transmission Perry?
What does cooling down in Tennessee mean John? Here it means below freezing.
On some of these newer trucks Morris, they sometimes have the slave cylinder and release bearing as a 1 piece unit that slides over the front shaft and bolts to the front face of the transmission. I just sold a 89 zf42 for a smallblock and I had to replace the slave cylinder 2 years ago. Good thing I had pulled the cab off as its a big transmission to mess with. If you Google the transmission type it'll show up on Wikipedia or some site will have a how to thread on it. The Trans I need to find is in the 1 ton dually 77 to 80, there may be more years but I'm not sure. I'm restricted to the 10,000 gvw as they have the 31 spline larger yoke. Anything else and I have to modify the front drive shaft.
That sounds like it`s somebody`s idea of a not so great an idea in making it harder to service or maybe it's a throw away item.
It sounds like my son is thinking of taking his Ranger to a repair shop since he doesn't have a good place to work on it. Ford wants about $2,200 to replace the clutch and this shop quoted between $1,200 and $1,500. It will be more if they have to mess with more things.
On the big block and diesel zf's the slave cylinder is externally mounted and a lot easier to work on. There are 2 variations of the same piece, 1 has a plastic mounting plate to the transmission face, the other is aluminum mounting plate. Plastic one can Crack while tightening the bolts. About a 20 difference in price. I'm so used to having to buy heavy duty that it's normal to have pay the higher price.
Sunny and 13°C so it beautiful Sat for Nov.
It would be nice if the Ranger slave cylinder was externally mounted, that would make it a lot easier to replace. For only $20 I would certainly go for the aluminum mounting plate.
Have a good weekend Ian.
