and I think that is why you are having problems. The tank is designed for later frames (37" starting in late 77+) and the earlier frames are only 34", this is not a crew cab specific issue. If you search for other threads of people swapping in larger tanks to early trucks you should find some options.
Hopefully somebody will correct me if I'm wrong, or post links.
Good to know, thanks for the info! I may try to turn it sideways and make it fit. The largest tank I could find that actually fits correctly is only 23 gallons and that just isn't enough.
Hello,1980-1996 ford cab and chassis plastic tank is a direct bolt in for a 34 inch frame.the one I put in my 79 f350 crew was from a 85 gas motor truck=small hole sending unit.I used a 84 bronco II sending unit spun 180 degrees. The skid plate is the real problem most are rotted out,so you can just make straps.I bought a NOS skid plate from Tasca Ford, yes It was a lot of $$ but I did not have to make one thing.Plate was from 1991.Super camper specials have the right size rear tanks but the fill is out the rear of the tank to clear the bed mounts and they have a habit of cracking.

What's going on guys. I just bought my first crewcab I'm pretty excited about it. I've read so much my eyes are crossed, but I can't really seem to find anyone that has completed a 4x4 conversion on a 79 without cutting and splicing the front frame stub. And Ive read about the spring hangers from a highboy on the crewcab frame but I haven't seen anything on doing that to a 79. I've built a few trucks, but I'm not a welder so that scares me. My granddad is a welder, we did a mustang 2 conversion on my 56 ford, and its still going strong. I have a 79 f150 4x4 single cab short bed I plan on using for parts. I was initially thinking of doing the conversion using coil springs, but now I'm not sure. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and advice!

Pictures or it didn't happen, lol Lets see some pics of your crew. It can be done and if you want it bad enough it will happen. keep searching the threads and some of the nice folks on here will post up some builds or at least more info for you. I just built my 4x4 front end along with many others on here. mines a little older then yours (bump) and I'm not sure of the differences between the two. Sounds like between you and your grand-pappy you have the skills to get it done... good luck and don't give up....

Welcome aboard, post your question in the 73-79 forum. You will get a lot more responses and feedback since your question about isn't crew cab specific. And yes we need pics.
well boys, bought the truck 5 years ago and got to enjoy the fruits of my hard work the other day... Took her for its first short trip around the block finally. Just buttoning up a few small things and its gonna be time to play a little...
wow the color really looks great...what an awesome truck.
I like the 1972 script in the front bumper - cool addition.
Thanks man, the front cap ended up larger then the rear one due to angle of the dangle so it just was a good spot to fill out with the 1972, did turn out cool though, thank you...

I am looking for the center piece of plastic molding that holds the rear edge of the front headliner panel and the front edge of the rear panel. It goes across from the driver side pillar to the passenger side pillar. The pieces of the one I have are in the shape of a shallow W and it snaps on the metal roof support, and has rivets approximately every 6 inches apart securing it. Does anyone know the precise name of this molding? Has anyone found this molding or a good substitute? Please let me know your thoughts and ideas.
Thanks

Good luck finding an OEM one. Nobody repops them. Your best bet is to create one and cover it with some fabric and use small short metal screws to screw into the metal tabs or rail that the old one snapped into. Someone else might have another way to do it.
