the torq shift was designed to handle over 700hp and 1000Ft pounds of tq, i believe.
Just a rumor
The 3rd and drive gear clutches (the intermediate clutch pack, to be specific) will start slipping at anything over about 465-470 flywheel horsepower, and the overdrive clutch will chatter at shift at about the same point. So far, overpowering this transmission doesn't result in immediate destruction or severe overheating, however worn clutches and debris have a bad habit if building up EXTREMELY quickly in these transmissions, and in due time will wipe out the entire internal set.
i meant that the metal gears (actual gears, specifically 1st-3rd..were designed to handle the 700/1000, but the clutch would slip after about any major HP mod to the stock clutch.

.........
In the Torqshift, other than the two sets of planetary gears, there are no "main gears" for each ratio as there are in manual gearbox, there are clutch packs that determine the gear ratio by diameter. There is no single "drive clutch" as there is in a manual transmission; instead, there is a fluid coupling with the torque converter.
The converter lockup clutch, intermediate, and overdrive clutch packs, along with the variable shift force solenoid design are the limiting factors within this transmission. These are deficiencies that can only be solved by a total overhaul of the transmission, if the intended use is high performance racing and towing.
After seeing the damage to mine, I honestly do not believe there is a single component in the case that I would trust to the 700 HP mark

ok, i must be thinking of different transmissions, i took apart my ATV bottom end recnetly and im still seeing those gears...
btw, back the the thread...
what can i get the 1704 tuner for (pricewise) shipped to my door, vic?
These AINT atv trannys
One word for the SCMT- go to Motorhaven
Just click "Parts shop" at the top left of the page...best prices around, and free next day shipping. The 1704 for the F450/F550 has just now been released, give them a call for info..
Vic, can I get your input on the SCT Excalibrator?
Innovative diesel sells the Superchips Custom units, and I have been looking into getting one. They offer a tune that they CLAIM is safe to stack with the Edge Juice (I suppose the injector timing advance has been removed) and will tune the transmission.
Can I order this tuning through Motorhaven, since the carry the SCT stuff?
The box I was specifically looking at came with a tune for the *safe* stacking program (once again, I would like to have your input on this, Vic) and a transmission only program (which I would like to have in any scenario).
IF these custom programs are safe for stacking, would this program have the same style powerband as the primary 150 hp program for the 1704 (ie retains torque all the way to 4300 rpms) and still maintain the low end grunt of the edge tuning?
I really miss the feel of my 1704....it just doesn't lay the peak power down like the Edge box Even though it drives far, far better.
SCT and Superchips Inc, while they have worked together on things in the past are two totally separate companies (separate ownership) and separate product lines.
A tune you buy from SCT would be entirely different from the 1704, since it does not contain and is not derived from my files.
I'm not sure what their "safe" stackable file looks like, so I couldn't tell you how they are setting the injection timing curve.
Also, the injector timing curve is a funny thing.
Not giving away any secrets, how the curve is set will help dictate the power band.
Lots of low end grunt is often at the cost of the "sustain" of the power curve.....part of the reason the 1704 has 3 separate files. The big peak is usually followed by a quicker dive. A slightly smaller peak can result in a longer sustain if it's tuned correctly.
There is a "scientific" explanation for this, but I'm not gonna just post here on how to tune a diesel =o)

where can I find the build date, engine build date and flash version on my 2003 F 250?
Sticker on PCM will show original PCM flash (between battery and drivers side fender.)
Sticker in door jamb will show date of birth.
Please be patient with answers in this thread. I am in here in my spare time and I don't commit to answering all questions, nor do I commit to being here everyday.
Well, my SC1704 showed up just prior to heading off for Thanksgiving. Low and behold it needs an update day one . It has version 5.01 of its program set, and my '04 is running PCM update 4U7A-12A650-BFA (RC2). Tried to get it setup, but it told me an update was required. I'm surprised as this Ford update (RC2) has been out since the summer. My question is this: Is it worthwhile to sending it back now for an SC update (5.03?) or possibly waiting a little bit if a newer version is nearing completion? It would be better to just send it in once if there is something to be gained.

Tks in advance,
Mark
There is no advantage in waiting.
The program is more refined than ever.
Send it in for an update, and I'll add it to the database.
