That display is exactly what I have. My friend has the speedometer/mileage cluster that your showing. It's from a gas. Can't I use that and keep the gauge and tach cluster stock from my diesel? I'd like to do this this weekend.
My odometer only goes dark after I fill the tank with gas. I thought it had something to do with the auto miles to empty and the mpg guage on the overhead console. It comes back on after a few minutes.
It's all good brother!.......We're here to help each other.
Welcome to FTE!.
You'll usually find the help you need here....
Glad you solved your issue. I used this very thread to help me and that was indeed the problem as it has been at least six months since I soldered my board and the problem has not re-occurred.
Sorry, I didn't initially realize you were a first time poster(all that good Canadian Whisky.. )
I've noticed that all of the reply's to this thread have been on 2001 and older of vehicles. I have a 2005 Ford F-150 that is having the odometer problem. If I take off the dash and mess around with it for a little bit the miles will flash for a few minutes then stop. I have no luck any other time.
The thing I'm having trouble with is figuring out how to remove the main board from the gauge cluster seeing that it's different than the older model Ford's.
If anyone has fixed a 2005+ year Ford odometer blackout problem, please let me know.
I put together some pictures and instructions on removing the dash and cluster. I wish I had something like this when I first attempted to remove the dash about 1 year ago, unsucessfully.
These were from my 99 Expedition built in 12/1998.
You will need 9/32 or 7mm sockets. If you have one that is magnetized, that would help not loose any of the screws.
Another happy camper here. I have a 2001 F150 Supercrew with an intermittent odometer light. I've had the truck for two years, and it's bugged the crap out of me since day one. Then I found this thread. On my truck the entire headlight switch assembly pops out by inserting a screwdriver into the notch at the bottom....as outlined in this video: YouTube - MOV08554
The entire process took me a couple of hours. The time was doubled by the fact that I dropped a screw deep down inside and had to disassemble much more of the dash than I intended.
I pulled off the circuit board and found the typical cold solder joint like most of the rest of you have found. A little touch of solder fixed it right up.
Anyway, thanks to the original poster, and all who have contributed to the usefulness of this thread. I had a grin on my face as I drove to work today....with an illuminated odometer!
Hey guys, I am having a similar but opposite problem with our 2005 Expedition EB. The "message center" where the mileage and all other data is displayed has every pixel lit up. See below.
It used to do it very occasionally over the last few years and now has been all lit up for a few months now. It even stays on when the key is out and doors are shut -- its like its permanently supplied power.
Anyone have any idea how to fix this one? I can't find any info online or anyone else who has fixed this.

It appears that the processor in the cluster has become damaged. My suggestion would be to find a replacement cluster at a salvage yard and have a Ford dealer program it to your truck.

Thanks - that's the conclusion I've come to as well. I removed it today, played around with the contacts, etc. but no change.
I DO have a few questions for you though:
1) Can I install the cluster and drive it to the dealer to program it or is the vehicle non-operable once its swapped (but not yet programmed)? I'd prefer to swap it myself if possible to make sure nothing gets broken and to save some labor.
2) Does anyone know how much labor is charged to install and program it or just program it? I would assume an hour each, but am not sure.
