What did you guys do with all the "left over" screws?
(just kidding, I only had one!)
I just did my wife's truck tonight and I must say it was real easy thanks to the detailed instructions and pics! Thank you all for the help!
And I lost 2 screws down in the dash trying to line them back up deep in for the gauges... But so far so good...I was impressed by how the light switch button flipped released the whole assy..pretty cool, I would have broke that for sure without reading the instructions first.
On my 2000 Expedition, Department of Natural Resources 4wd special, the headlight switch assembly just pries out since it is held in place with 2 metal tangs. You can't do the headlight **** trick on it.
Thanks for the tip. Mine ***** the bed about 9 months ago and finally decided to search around to see the problem, to try and save money from going to the Company. I am going to take out the cluster to take out the main board. Then have one of the techs or electrical engineers in my office fix it. good way to save a few hundred dollars. keep you all posted on the results.
Yet another "satisfied customer". After waiting over a year, I took care of my wife's 2000 EB 4 X 4 this weekend. I was so proud of myself, but when I told her what I did, her response was, "Oh, it was broken ?"
I just purchased a 99 Expedition. The spedometer blacked out when I test drove it one time for a very short period. I did not think anything of it. I just thought it had some kind of delay before it came on. Since the purchase the more I drove it the worse it seemed to get. Thanks to your post I was able to remove the circuit board and take it to a guy who works on VCRs and TVs to have it checked and soldered. With the help of your post I was able to show him the spot to check. My circuit board had two cold solder joints. Since the fix the odometer seems to work perfectly. I even notice that it comes on faster than it did before. I just wanted to say thank you for posting this fix. I also have a theory as to the reason these solder joints "break" if you would call it that. I noticed that there is pressure on the ribbon with the wires that plug in when I put the white plastic back to the cluster on. With the poor solder job and the pressure on the pins I can see how the joints "break". Thanks again!
By the way.. I could not find any reference on here to remove the headlight switch for the auto dimming and automatic lights... pry the headlight switch cover off gently... and then inside the switch is a plastic lever you have to push to the right and it pops out.

There is an excellent link (with pictures) in post #149 from Sloberdog, that is the only way I could have figured it out.
Yeah... I found that after I had already done it the wrong way... interestingly I had the heater core replaced back in July... and the mechanic apparently broke off the face of the headlight switch.. so it came off easily!
