I was thinking, my truck has the overhead compass, temp gauge thing that stopped working years ago. I wonder if it is a similar solder joint in a connection in that too?
Haven't done my odometer yet.. I have to, it is driving me nuts.. Funny you said that, My overhead display just stopped working this week..
F150 2002 4.6 4x4
thanks for the post...that is one of the problems I'm having and am glad I'm not the only one...as soon as i get some time, (as you say don't rush) I'll give it a shot. THANKS AGAIN!!!
Signed up just to say THANKS and good write up! Tackled the odometer blackout issue on my 2000 f150 4x4 (207,000m) this afternoon. Only issue I had was with the headlamp assembly coming out. I did what they say to remove it but it was catching and wouldn't release. Eventually got it off, and that took longer than the whole repair! Since I got the little soldering iron out I found a write up on the overhead temp/direction blackout issue and tackled that today too. Resistors came loose on that pcb. Looking forward to being a member of this forum, tons of great information from a lot of talented folks.
I just tackled my Overhead Temp/compass. Easy to get apart but my sausage fingers and trying to soldier them tiny resistors back on was a pain in the ****. I found a guy on ebay that fixes them. Has the tools and experience. Got it back today, Worked great $20. I soldier lots of things, But i just couldn't get those surface mount resistors to stick. by-focals were just wasn't working.

For 20 bucks, leave that microvision electronics to those younguns...
Glad you got it working.
Just to add to this thread, and it may have been mentioned somewhere in here, the instrument cluster cold solder joint failure could cause intermittent no starts. I had a crank but no start issue that had no codes and was a bugger to track down. I went through a bunch of suggestions IAC, Crank position sensor, Throttle position sensor, fuel pump, fuel filter, etc. But the problem was the power connections to the cluster, they were intermittently going out, and resulting in the no start. I pulled the cluster and checked all the solder joints to the main power supply and fixed a bunch. Now she starts like a gem. So if you have a cold start issue and your cluster has ever acted up, check there, a good test is a rap or two on the dash and try the start again. My cluster would go off, then come on, act crazy. So for anyone going crazy with a no start, no code, but cranks, this could be it.
My 99 expy started just fine with the cluster removed
