On my 2000 Expedition, Department of Natural Resources 4wd special, the headlight switch assembly just pries out since it is held in place with 2 metal tangs. You can't do the headlight **** trick on it.
How do you pry out the assembly? My 2000 F150 needs the odometer fix and I can not get the assembly out with the **** trick. Any detailed information would helpful.
mine had the metal clips not the plastic things that retract inside with the switch like in those pictures. also there is a spot to stick a screwdriver or something flat under it in the middle on the bottom when your looking at the assembly from the driver seat. have to be careful prying it out though.. its tight, or at least mine was.

It's fixed!!!! The light switch did indeed have three metal clips, could not use the "**** trick" on this one. The three clips are located, one on bottom center, one on left, and one on top right. I managed to use a very thin and flexable putty knife, inserted in the top right and the switch came out. It looks like it would take a thin tool no wider than the slot on the bottom if you are going to use that position. There was a cold solder joint right where the picture shows. It took about an hour from start to finish. Made sure I took my time and went by the write up. Awsome bunch of folks with alot information on this site. Thanks for the help.
My mother failed NJ inspection because her odometer quit just as the inspection guy was getting into her 99 Navigator (what luck huh?) It came back on just before she got back home., I checked everything out and we were at the point where it was about an hour away before going into the dealer. Then I found this place and this post!!!! Gonna attempt it tomorrow.
Great info is Great info, regardless of how old it is!! Big Thanks to those who take the time to document and post pics of problems such as these!!!! My mom now believes the internet is good for something.,.,lol
I wish I would have seen this thread a year ago. I had a 2000 F150 4X4 with the same issue. The dealer said common problem and wanted to replace the whole speedo. I said no and when it would go out, I would tap the area and it would always come back on. I have since traded up to a newer 250, but this was an irritating issue
OT:
My girlfriends laptop is not charging right and it is most likely a bad solder joint....guess i should brush up my solder joint skills and dig into it..
Using information from this thread and one on another site, I just fixed my 2000 XLT!
I had a moments trouble, like some others, removing my headlight switch until I determined mine was the "pry" type. I fashoned a 'j-hook' out of a bicycle spoke, put it into the slot at the bottom of the light switch and it popped right out. No way to damage finish on the dash this way, either.
There was an unused harness connector behind my light switch. In the pic below it's the one on the right with a red cap. Does anybody know what it does?

That method doesn't work for all years. Sometime during the 2000 model year Ford started using a snap-in switch like the one pictured below, at least on some models. You can see the notch of the pry slot just above the metal clip.
