I put together some pictures and instructions on removing the dash and cluster. I wish I had something like this when I first attempted to remove the dash about 1 year ago, unsucessfully.
These were from my 99 Expedition built in 12/1998.
You will need 9/32 or 7mm sockets. If you have one that is magnetized, that would help not loose any of the screws.
My 98' Expedition has had this problem for a while. Only a small area is lit up at night. This is a great post and I will try to fix her this weekend. Thanks
Id just like to thank Dakota_viking and Sloberdog for their contributions to the odometer repair. I did mine today. At first i couldnt see any loose solder, then i saw the cracked solder on the single pin whne i used a jewelry magnifying glass. I fixed it and its all running great now.
Thanks guys! You both get good reputation for this!

Ditto! I found this thread a year ago and have been putting it off. Odometer has been intermittent for a couple of years even though I only have 48,000 miles on a 1999 Expedition. I finally took the plunge today...should have done it a year ago! Piece of cake with such expert instructions. I don't think I would have figured out how to remove the lights assembly without Sloberdog's detailed pictorial. Thanks again to both of you!!!
I found my new best friend--this site! I fixed my power door locks today for .01 cent from the information I found in this fourm. Now I found a possible fix to my other problem, blanking out Odometer. Funny, the problems I have on my 99 F-150 seem to common to all F-150s in this year group.
Thank you dakota-viking, I'll give this a try tomorrow!
This "blackout" odometer syndrome has made me nuts for about two years now on my 1999 F150...many many thanks for this information and the savings of many hard earned dollars to fix this problem! I shall tackle this irritating problem asap and stop banging on my dash to see the mileage on my F150 display...
I was almost on the verge of letting Ford fix this...but since I am proficient and certified in specialty applications soldering and am a mechanical technician by trade, I can get this done with these simple steps!
Thanks again!
While in the process of taking out the dash of my '99 F-150 to replace that darned blend-door, I figured I'd take the opportunity to fix the intermittant odometer problem too. I took a look at that same pin that Dakota shows in his first post,.....at first I couldn't find a bad joint, but after I put on a jeweler's loupe I found not only a cold joint on the same one he shows in the photo, but another one at the other end of that row of pins!
That ought to fix it!!
(Now if I can just get that dash the rest of the way out without breaking anything!)
