Well it looks like I am Colorado bound (Denver area) in the upcoming months.... That being said, does anyone have a part number for a 4" generic cat that will pass CO emissions? As I understand it, it's just an opacity test, but are they really going to crawl under there and run the part numbers and see that it's not an EPA or CARB compliant CAT? I see mixed reviews by folks trying to add one back in for this reason.
I'd check and see if your MY is affected. Even the communist regime in California does not look pre-97 for emissions on diesels.
That is what I find weird. Anything I can find online states 1988-2012 diesels need to be tested annually. Which my truck is exempt in commifornia for testing being 1995.
Is this a permanent move Jake? There is a way to put SD plates on it without inspection.
Yes sir! Getting out of the Air Force and I start my new job in late May, so I plan on sticking around for a good while.
I was contacted about a job in South Dakota but did not want to take it considering the contract was going to end in the fall and the company wasn't sure if they were going to get renewed or not.
Well, if you get turned down you can always join a mail forwarding service like I have out of Sioux Falls, SD. I did because of us traveling a lot and mail is one of those necessary things. They will send it to wherever your at. They also arrange to get you plates, registration etc. Down here in AZ there are so many snowbirds the cops don't say anything.
I am of the mindset to pop on an OE cat that the 7.3DI had a backfire before so you can pass visual. My AZ pals say just receive a snap test, so no acting 16 and belching smoke and you are fine. I do know some places do not even perform the visual.

Although, am betting that none of us are a past President, so take this for what it is worth

Just seeing this. Love the commifornia. Haven't heard that before, and I've been here since the early 70s.
So does my '97 need annual inspection in CA? First time diesel owner, if diesel has anything to do with it.

"Commiefornia" is a term of old. No, with your '97, you will be exempt from diesel emissions, but you will get to pay the pesky $375 commercial fee unless you put a cap on it and declare it non-commercial. I did this and it worked. You are not supposed to haul ANYTHING....EVER.
Are you moving into Denver? Or just around the area? I live in Colorado as well but I’m out on the plains. Since I’m not in a city I am emissions exempt. Whenever I go to Denver cops don’t really care. They’re generally more busy with all the speed racers. If you’re moving into the city tho you’re on the right track

Trying to find a place in Westminster, Longmont, Arvada or in the area. Commute will be into Boulder so ideally I wouldn't want my commute to be more than 45 minutes one way.
I did reach out to CDPHE and they told me my truck falls under Colorado Regulation 20. There is an excerpt that states there will be no conversion to meet the standard if it originally wasn't sold in California that way. I am going to call their emissions center this week and see if I can find a part number or get more information. Since my OBS is a Federal "Cali" truck I would assume a federal cat will meet their demands. I will verify before purchasing.
