I found Rufuss twenty minutes ago, out in the front yard with snow already beginning to drift over him. It was his time, and now he is out of pain.
He was a good dog, and getting on in years - more than eight for a Labrador is good going I suppose...
When the weather clears I will build a bier for him out of good clean wood, set him on top of it, and give him a viking send off.
That makes four, including a very good friend of mine and two older gents, that I have had to say goodby to in the last year or so.
May the rabbits run for you
May the springtime sun always shine
May God have a warm spot for you next to the fireplace
And your chew-bones never be stolen by the dog next door...
AMEN
Aww Rufie - I'm going to miss you
I think I'm about to indulge myself by getting snot slinging drunk...
I knew his time was coming soon. I had no idea how I would deal with it when it came.
Tonight is a night of expected tears, when the inevitable happens and I reject it...
As if by wishing it not so it could change anything, but like "Puff the Magic Dragon", we know that we outlive our little ones.
What shall I do? Curse God for not giving us equal time together? Wish I had gone on first?
It isn't reasonable...
So when the ground thaws and I can gather him up, I'll have a short and honest funeral bier for him.
Lay my old friend on top of a lot of wood and say goodby, knowing I gave him a home and cared the best I could for him.
His spirit has already gone into the sky, the smoke will only carry away what was left behind.
If we are fortunate indeed we have boon companions, and he was one. A life shared is a life remembered.
That doesn't mean we stick around forever, or have to, the day comes when we all move on.
I was lucky he shared his time here with me.
Rufuss was strong, I will not disgrace his memory by being any less.
I know how you feel tonight, I lost my buddy Demon (Malamute) just before Christmas last year, you would NOT believe the size of hole it took to bury him. He was about 125 lbs and as tall as me when he stood on his hind legs..
Give Woola an extra hug tonight and love her more tomorrow and all the days after....
I don't want to think about it anymore tonight.
Woola is here with me, making a nuisance of her fuzzy self...
Pretty fuzzy kiddo, I don't want you to go away.
We go on. She just stuck her nose up under the PC desk and clamored for attention, and I have Loreena McKennit on the music system. She likes to be wherever I am, (Woola, not Loreena) and is a forty pound bundle of joy.
Little miss fuzzy bright eyes...
Punkin' with a racing stripe

NOSE LIKKER!
It took a lot to get her to settle down for that picture!
Little miss "CHIEF"
She came in here just a bit ago when I was beginning to wonder where she went, dragging a discarded milk jug with her that she snagged out of the trash and was chewing on...
Rufuss I will miss, her I will have both hands full with
