Well after the county Sheriff announced this morning that some parts of the county would not get power restored for 1-2 weeks, the head of the power company made a statement about 3 hours later that it will be well into next week before they will get the poles replaced and that there are many more than the 300 they originally said were down. Since we are at the very end of the county, we will be last. I heard that the governor was coming here today, insurance agent said they need him to declare official disaster order to cover all the claims. Patti went back to the house to get more meds, said she spotted the power crews about 25 miles out from the house.
But I should begin looking into emergency power and heat. The most practical approach with my budget is to explore a primitive small underground shelter that would double as a tornado hole.
Heard on the radio tonight that 40k in Kentuck are without water, for a week. One thing that folks might not always think about, a standard water heater holds at least 50 gallons. Personally I gotta at least have coffee, to become ambulatory. A coleman stove and percolator, and life ain't so bad, even if iced/snowed in.

I hear you on the coffee, I wouldn't make it 30 minutes into the day without my coffee.....
We probably could have toughed it out, but with my lungs, I just can't pull start the generator anymore. Luckily Patti's 17 yr old grandson has been with us and been starting it for me, but they got power back where he lives in the next county and he has to go back to school tomorrow. I guess after all this clears up I'll have to try and get an electric starter for this generator or buy a new one. Be nice to have one of those fancy big 'stand by' units but I'm too old and slow to rob a bank to pay for one.
We'll be leavin Cookeville in the morning as I managed to get a hotel room in Crossville then.
Looks like we're going to get up to 6 inches of snow starting this afternoon. It will be ugly, but only for a day or so....supposed to be about 40 degrees on Thursday. That should melt everything away.
I hope the electric and water restoration predictions were overestimated, and you get both restored post-haste. We went nearly 2 weeks without electricity a few years back, and it was horrible. Fortunately, it was a bit warmer, so temperature wasn't much of a concern.
I feel for you guys that are still without water and power. Our power was out for a week when the historic flood came. The water was not restored for a month! I can manage without power, but no water was horrible. It was warm weather too. Didn't have to worry about freezing.
About 1/2 " of the white stuff as I type . I am better prepared than some . I have a draw well , wood heat , oil lamps , and a generator .
My shop also has a contract with the local electric co-op . They like to keep the shop in business .... We can't work on their trucks without a working shop !
Their contract has lead to others ... companies out of Texas , La. , Chat., Mbro. , Ky.
We work on a lot of line trucks and medium duty trucks .
Well we are in a room closer to home for tonight and until Friday. Went by the house today and they are replacing power poles up to about 11 miles away so far. Then tonight the crews rolled into this hotel, the guys are from Minnesota and said that they are working in our area and are intent on having all the poles replaced out to our house by Saturday. They also said that FEMA crews are slated to arrive in the morning to start cleaning up all the brush. I'll be headed to Knoxville in the morning looking for a new generator, as the insurance company called me this afternoon to inform me that since the cause of the power outage occurred off my property, they won't cover the hotel bills.
I bought my generator from TSC years ago . 15 or so ? when a big storm went through . Thank God it still works good . Briggs engine , starts easy . Stay away from a Techumsy . Cohler ain't much easier to start . Get the electric start with pull start back up .
Hope life comes to normal soon for you . Need anything ? Help can be had .... I don't have much , willing to help if possible .
