Jim, are you forgetting that the 385 engines like the FE and MEL have a sleeve or counter weight behind the balancer where the seal rides? Trackerrrr, if it is indeed a 1977 then it shouldn't have the "hatchet" counter weight behind the balancer, which doesn't look quite as bad as mine did.
Nope. No hatchet counter weight. Just a straight sleeve, albeit a bit banged up.
Didn't think it would have, the 385s came on the market in 68, the 429 replacing the 428 in T-birds and the 460 replacing the 462 in Lincoln Continentals and only engine for the Mark III.
Got the pump back on along with a few other items. Did some cleaning of the pulleys and brackets. Replaced the PVC grommet and rubber hoses. Discovered that some of the water pump bolts were too short the hard way and had to buy some more about 1/2" longer. Replaced the heater hose nipple in the pump with a new one from Mr. Gasket. Replaced the return hose to the PS pump, had a pinhole in it. Discovered that my PS pump has about 1/4" play in and out at the pulley so it'll be changed out shortly now...
Looks good! Well done. The only concern I have is with the Mr Gasket part. I find there recent stuff to be of really poor quality, but hope that's not the case with the hose nipple.
I finally got a chance to dig out the original rear chassis harness from mine. If the tags are too small, PM me your email and I will send it to you.
On the right side of the picture, the upper set of connectors are the front (left side near the frame), lower set is the rear (left rear corner of frame).
Today was equal parts frustration and satisfaction. I got the truck fired up and running and it sounds great. However I look underneath and see a steady drip drip of the green stuff. WTF??? Turns out I missed adding sealer to one bolt that threaded into the water jacket. Pulled the bolt and resealed so we'll see if that fixes it. Also when I started truck I hear a huge exhaust leak. WTF again. There wasn't a leak when I started tearing it down. I found this:
This plug decided to let go when I started the truck. Oh joy.
That plug, as you surely know, seals the front of the AIR passage that is drilled lengthwise through the head. I think the thread size on the outside of the plug is 5/8-11 and a short bolt will seal it. But, if you have an accessory that mounts there you have to have the plug.
Edit: I was thinking small-block. The BBF's air passages are bigger and I don't know the thread size.
I think that plug is .666 and available at NAPA.
There was a guy "Inside Man" who came on here a year back and did an emissions delete on a 460 before he sold it.
