Started on the rear brakes today, what a freaking mess. I started with the left rear as I thought it was leaking brake fluid. Nope. Turned out the inner seal on the drum was shot and leaking axle oil all over everything. The drum was deeply grooved on one side (?). Took a bit of encouragement with some screwdrivers to get the drum off too as one of the long springs that hooks to both shoes had broken and was wedged in between the drum and shoes pretty good. But now I'm off to the parts store to get me some new shoes, hardware kits, seals, and cleaner. Ugh.
I just went through your entire thread and gotta say, hats off to you. Id love to have a crew cab dually. Mostly because I have a wife and 4 kids so we dont fit in a single cab
I didn't get any pics of the backing plate and shoes right after I pulled the drum off but the parking brake arm was completely FUBARed. It was jammed behind the trailing shoe and was pretty much useless. Now I know why the right rear tires were locking up, no braking action what so ever from the rear left side. I've bought other cars that were neglected, I just can't think of any that were this bad....
For those that are going to tackle this job, also check the small pin that comes installed on replacement brake shoes for the auto adjuster. Mine had new pins already pressed in, but they were just a hair bigger in diameter than the existing pin. The adjuster arm didn't fit over the new pin and I had to 'encourage' it onto the pin.
I too just read the whole thread and I completely understand buying this truck and going through all it's systems and "owning" it! Congrats to you and please keep us posted! Your daughter will have good memories of helping her Dad and is learning alot by watching you too!
Did the right rear brake shoes today, was actually easy! No nasty axle oil to deal with but the wheel seal was just about gone so I caught this one in time. Changed the brake hose out too while I was under there. Now on to the fronts.
No pics this time, I just wanted to get this done today.
And to add to my woes, when I shut the truck off after moving it into the garage, I could hear a humming noise. Fuel pump running in the rear tank. Rear tank not selected, key not on....swell....
Seems to have 'fixed' itself after the next startup....
