And get/make a different mount for the alternator, thereby ditching the air pump bracket?
I've been looking at the high and low mount aftermarket brackets. Are there stock brackets off a car that will work to raise it up? I can hit the junkyard pretty much every day.
Yes, there are brackets from cars that will work. Or, you can get one from a different engine, like the M, that has the arms for the air pump as separate pieces so they are easy to hacksaw off. This link shows what I did for Dad's truck.
Pulled the front apart today to fix the leaky timing cover. Found a hole in the water pump plate. The timing chain's stretched so it'll be changed out too.
That's nothing out of the ordinary given the brown sludge that was in there.
You're making great progress with the truck!
Check the little scrolls in the back side of the timing case around the water passages are not filled up.
This is your last defense against water pouring into the oil if you have a leak there.
At least it pisses to the outside where you can see it,
Do yourself a favor, get the EFI timing chain set, it is a straight up roller set.
I was thinking about going with a timing gear set like those on eBay so there'll be no stretch at all in the future. But, some say they are very noisy.
"Quiet" is not really quiet.
There is still some noise from steel gears even if they are helically cut.
The plastic coated factory ones in a 4.9l are pretty quiet.
Those look straight cut so it's going to howl like a blower on a drag car.
I hope you have a very loud stereo if you install those.
There's even a little noise from a roller chain that you don't get with the Hy-Vo type multi-plate stock chain.

Personally I like gear drives, but I wouldn't put one on a daily driver.

I went with a Cloyes double roller chain and gears. I thought about it and decided that as much as I'd like the gear whine, that would be cool for all of five minutes on the freeway before I got tired of it. Took me several hours to dig out all the blue silicone in the timing cover but I got it back on and fairly clean. Now to find a water pump plate in the morning...

I couldn't find a Hy-Vo chain and sprockets anywhere around here. Everything was double roller or some variant thereof. Are the Hy-Vo chains any better?

I don't think so.
They are cheaper to make, and perhaps a little quieter.
I have the 1122 chain on my truck and I'm happy with it.
At least there aren't shards of nylon clogging my pickup screen.
It took me almost an hour to clean all that stuff out when I had the pan off.
