The 5.38s are very snappy with the 38's and the 7.3! It was a major change. Merging onto the highway is a snap now! And passing is amazing.
Good to hear. How did you like them when you had the 5.4? I figured 5.38's with 38s would be about the same as 5.13's with 35s.
Keep up the good work

If you are towing a lot though then 5.13's are probably a safe bet.
Only reason i am going with 4.56's and the cummins is to sacrafice some MPG's (will still be better thn a 5.4l and 35's on stock gears lol) and save myself some money on engine upgrades that would get me the same power with higher gears.
Pretty much all it does now is tow and is a farm truck. And of course some fun on the weekend. It struggles with pulling anything over 7k though and that's with my 33s. I don't put a whole lot of miles on it anymore though so I figured I can probably get another 2 years out of these tires before I get a set of 35s. I don't think I want to regear before that as then I'd get used to that power and then lose some of it when I go to 35s lol.
You've done an awesome job Matt. It's amazing what a wire wheel, fresh coats of POR 15, and a whole lot of man hours will do for the undercarriage.
Thanks Garrick it actually took less time than you think just seems like forever on here because i go a few days at a time without working on it.
Here's this weekends update!
I pulled the rear axles outside and stripped it down until i needed the spindle nut which i had to order, painted my shocks, and cleaned off my bed of all teh crap my family has been placing ontop of it so i can start working on it.
Side Question before teh pics, i cannot for the life of me find the torque specs of the hangers does anyone know? i found it a long time ago but i cannot find it again (long time ago as in 3 yearsish).
Ok now pics!
As you can see everything is tightened down and the tires are on dolly's in place waiting for the axle to get hung under there.
I pulled the axle and stripped it down as far as i could, hows that oil look? it seemed bad and smelt horrible to me it smelt burnt.
Painted shocks
Lastly i ordered traction bars last week so once i paint the axle and i can hang it then ill get the traction bars and install and tighten up the rear end and be done!
Nice work man! that oil doesn't look too bad. About what mine looked like when we did the swap.
Grizzly, the 5.38's and the 5.4 did amazing. Towed the big boat alot better and gave the trans a bit of a break. Got my rpms down to about 1800 -2000 going 75-80 on the highway.
Cool, thanks man that's reassuring i have never seen rear diff fluid before, and i didn't really want to rebuild the rear axle right now i was planning on doing that once the cummins is in and running lol.
Good to know, it is 11 years old and has 104k on it without any changing so i guess it's not a complete phenomenon lol. I should have my new brakes, POR Caliper kit, Maghytec cover and new dust shields in by early next week.
Hey Guys, I am trying to figure out how viable putting in the cummins is going to be. As awesome as it would be even though i already have the motor and trans i am thinking getting past the inspection is going to be the biggest challenge.
Starting to think supercharging the 5.4l or getting a V10 might be a better viable option and cheaper... am i crazy for thinking this at this stage?
EDIT: Decided to stay the course did an estimate on cost to finish and its roughly the same in the end.
Got the rear axle and tires all mounted up last night...i forgot how damn tall this thing was/is! the frame is just above my hip lol. It has i would say probably 2" of Rake now and with the 4" front springs that should fix it especially with the weight of the diesel going in that would IMO make the front stock heightish again.
Pics of the garage door lol:
Just some others i took, i still need to straighten the axle out but i am going to wait until i get my traction bars in so i can put the mounts on and then just tighten it all up.
Looks awesome! Make sure you got those u-bolts nice and tight.
I don't think you are crazy for your thoughts at this point. You can get your money back on the diesel stuff, or just wait a year to put it in so you can at least drive the thing
Thanks man, I only loosely put them on so i can get the tires on dollies and push the truck a couple of feet away from the bed giving me space to work on it so i can hen put it on and gain half the garage lol. Plus i need to install the mounts and make sure the tires are centered in the wheel wells.
I walked by the truck this morning and the bottom of the window is at my shoulder lol. I am hoping to have the bed done in a few weeks by the way. I am going to order the airdog and brake lines and cross brake for the Ex Tank next so that the rear end is 100% and i can rest the bed on top of the frame.
